SOUTH PORTLAND – Pat Kinslow’s RBI single in the fifth inning drove in what proved to be the decisive run as the University of Southern Maine hung on for a narrow 6-5 win over Bridgewater State Thursday.

Kinslow’s one-out single drove in freshmen Eddie Skeffington, who had doubled to give the Huskies (8-4) a 6-2 lead. Bridgewater State rallied for a pair in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Greg Sunderland and an RBI single by Tim LaConte.

The Bears (2-3) closed the gap to one run in the seventh inning against reliever Pat Foley on an RBI single by Ryan Fitzgerald, but Foley escaped further trouble with a strikeout.

St. Joe’s, Castleton split

STANDISH – Josh Racicot ripped a pair of RBI singles to pace Castleton State to a 5-4 victory over St. Joseph’s the first game of a doubleheader.

In the nightcap, St. Joseph’s roared back with a convincing 11-4 win. Cieslak belted out a two-run double to get the Monks rolling in the first.

Bates 10, UMF 2

LEWISTON -Bates College took advantage of four errors to score seven unearned runs in the second inning and went on to defeat the UMF 10-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Sarah Klenakis (4-1) allowed five hits while earning her third win of the season. In the second game, the Beavers (1-1) rallied back to a 10-4 victory on the solid pitching from Stephanie Moriarty.

The young hurler struck out six and allowed seven hits.

St. Joe’s, Thomas split

STANDISH – Kim Denbow ripped an RBI single in the seventh inning to lift Thomas College to a 2-1 win over St. Joseph’s in the first game of a doubleheader. Jen Lane contributed for the Terriers, going 2-for-4 on the day.

In the second game, Kayla Beaudoin went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead Thomas to a 4-0 win over St. Joseph’s.

Riley chipped in again for the Terriers with two hits and one run scored. Joy Ireland went the distance on the hill, allowing just three hits while earning the win.

Allyson Ferguson, Colleen Delahanty and Lindsey Roth shared pitching duties for the Monks, with Ferguson taking the loss.
