CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine baseball team split a doubleheader with Allegheny College.

Sophomore left-hander Peter Bergeron tossed a two-hit shutout to give the Huskies (2-0) a 3-0 victory in game one, while Allegheny roared back to post a 12-2 win in the nightcap, shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

Bergeron, who surrendered a pair of singles in the third inning, walked three and struck out one for the complete game shutout.

Southern Maine provided Bergeron with the only run he would need in the second inning when junior Tip Fairchild doubled and came home on Joe Ganley’s single. The Huskies added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning when Brandon Brewer doubled and Fairchild followed with his second of the game to score Brewer.

An infield error set up a first-and-third situation for Ganley, who brought Fairchild home with a fielder’s choice.
