BRISTOL, R.I. – Junior right-hander Tip Fairchild scattered four hits and struck out 15 over eight innings to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 6-1 win over Roger Williams University in baseball action Saturday afternoon.
Fairchild struck out the first five hitters he faced before the Hawks (5-5) put the ball in play.
Sophomore Nick Vardaro paced the Huskies’ 11-hit attack with three singles.
The Huskies (1-0) took an early lead as Fairchild led off the second with a single, moved up when sophomore Joe Ganley was hit by a pitch, and took third on a groundout and scored on another groundout. Andrew Dillon launched a lead-off home run in the seventh for the Hawks to spoil Fairchild’s attempt at a season opening shutout.
Fairchild retired the last six batters he faced before being relieved by Peter Bergeron.
Maine, Monmouth split
WEST LONG BEACH, N.J. – Monmouth University rallied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for an 8-7 victory in Game 1, and fell victim to Maine right-hander Steve Richard’s nine strikeouts in a 2-0 loss in the nightcap in baseball action Saturday. With Monmouth leading 5-2 in the fifth, Maine’s Ryan Quintal launched a two-run home run to right to cut the Hawks (4-8) lead to 5-4.

Maine splits
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Maine picked up a 3-1 win over Seton Hall, and fell 2-1 to Hofstra in doubleheader softball action Saturday afternoon.
The Black Bears (5-12) notched the victory in Game 1 as third baseman Lauren Dulkis went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, including the game-winning RBI double in the fourth. Erin Provost was perfect at the plate with three hits, scoring twice for Maine.
In Game 2, Maine scored an unearned run in the first inning, and it appeared for a while that the run might hold up as the difference.
However, Hofstra’s (10-9) second baseman, Wambold, came up with a big solo homer with one out in the sixth.
