AUGUSTA – Lake Region broke a tie score with one minute remaining and held off the defending Class B state champions from Greely in a 45-42 Western B semifinal win.

The Lakers advance to Friday’s Western B final to face top-seeded Yarmouth. Lake Region has not been to the regional final since 1988.

Third-ranked Greely (14-6) had erased a 40-37 lead when Emma Dickson scored on a rebound with 2:49 left, and Erica Davis added a free throw seconds later. A pass from Kim Rivet to Renee Nicholas set up an open layup for the Lakers, but Nicholas’ shot went over the rim. Kate Callahan was there to put in the rebound to give the Lakers the lead for good with one minute left.

Greely had three turnovers in the final 1:58 and failed to produce the equalizer the rest of the way.

Carolyn Ellis led the second-ranked Lakers (18-2) with 12 points. Rivet had 11 while Callahan added 10. Samantha Allen, Lake Region’s top scorer, was held to just four points after picking up three fouls in the first quarter.

Greely got 11 from Davis and 10 from Allison Scott

After a 9-9 tie in the first quarter, and a 23-21 Greely lead at the half, the Rangers opened up a seven-point advantage midway through the third quarter. A Davis jumper with four minutes remaining in the period made it 32-27, but Lake Region answered with a press breaker from Rivet and two free throws from Kayla Nowell. Though Greely got a pair of hoops from Davis, free throws from Rivet made it 36-33 entering the final quarter.

A three-point play by Callahan and back-to-back baskets by Ellis put the Lakers up 40-37.

Yarmouth 60, Gorham 51

AUGUSTA – Yarmouth won its first-ever semifinal game Thursday, surviving a scare from the Gorham Rams in a 6-51 Western B game.

The Clippers ended the game with a 10-1 run to break open a 50-50 tie. Yarmouth had been to the semifinals three times in the last four years.

A Gorham fast-break basket by Katie Guimond tied the game at 50-50 with 3:32 left in regulation. Top-seeded Yarmouth (19-1) broke that tie with a Lexie Brunelle 3-pointer from the corner with 3:12 remaining. Fifth-ranked Gorham (13-7) couldn’t muster another field goal the rest of the way.

Yarmouth made it 55-50 with 2:49 left on a Meredith Shaw rebound. Gorham’s only point in the last three minutes came on an Ashley Towle free throw with 2:05 left. The Clippers finished off the win with two free throws from Shaw with 1:29 left and a Brunelle three-point play in the closing seconds.

Brunelle and Aylie Baker each had 17 for the Clippers. Shaw finished with 15. Gorham received 19 from Towle and 10 from Guimond.

The Rams build a 27-19 lead in the second quarter, but Yarmouth finished the half with eight straight points, six coming from Brunelle on a 3-pointer and a three-point play.

The Clippers got up by 38-33 late in the third with six straight, but Towle came right back with five points on a three-point play and a rebound.
