LEWISTON – Elliott Linsley drained an 18-footer from the right wing to lift Bates College to a 69-67 win over Trinity as time expired in men’s basketball action Saturday.
Five Bobcats (17-7) finished in double digits, with Rob Stockwell scoring a team-high 17 points and pulling down nine rebounds, while Jon Furbush and Zak Ray had 14 apiece. Linsley and Brian Gerrity both scored 10 points.
Tyler Rhoten led the Bantams (17-6) with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds.
Albany 67, Maine 54
ALBANY, N.Y. – Jamar Wilson scored 20 points to lead Albany past Maine 67-54 Saturday.
Albany (12-11, 8-6 America East) broke a 39-39 tie early in the second half.
Brent Wilson hit a 3 and Jamar Wilson made a pair of free throws. Chris Wyatt made a layup to cap the run.
The game had eight lead changes in the first 33 minutes.
Maine (11-12, 6-8) went up 28-20 with 5:31 left in the opening period led by center Mark Flavin, who had 10 points in the half and finished with 14. Joe Campbell had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Black Bears.
Lucious Jordan had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Albany. Levi Levine added 12 points and eight rebounds.
St. Joseph’s 79, Green Mountain 73
STANDISH – Steve Monteiro scored a team-high 18 points, including his 1,000th of his college career, to lead St. Joseph’s College to a 79-73 win over Green Mountain College in men’s basketball play Saturday. Monteiro also pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Monks (9-10) held a 48-35 lead at the end of the first half behind Monteiro. Jon Pratt added 17 points in the win, while Chad Pulkkinen dished out 12 assists.
Green Mountain was led by Jonathan Simons with a game-high 20 points, and Jared Henery who added 17.
Williams 88, Bowdoin 81
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Tucker Kain rang up 32 points to lead Williams to an 88-81 victory over Bowdoin in men’s basketball action Saturday.
Andrew Newton contributed 13 points and Chris Shalvoy added another 11 for the Ephs (16-8).
Kyle Petrie sank 15 field goals, including a pair of treys, to notch a game-high 36 points for the Polar Bears (12-11). Andrew Sargeantson pitched in with another 20 points.
Colby 83, Middlebury 66
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Drew Cohen and Patrick McGowan scored 20 points apiece as Colby cruised to an 83-66 win over Middlebury.
Cohen shot 10-for-15 from the field and added six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for the Mules (13-7). McGowan was 4-for-8 from 3-point range and pulled down five rebounds.
Nick Farrell scored 11 points and was credited with five rebounds and four assists for Colby. Pat Featherston and Andrew Jenkins both had seven points.
The Ephs (6-18) were led by Mike Salek with 20 points and Adam Sinoway with 18.
RIC 93, USM 74
GORHAM — Kamari Williams netted a game-high 19 points and earned four assists as Rhode Island College defeated the University of Southern Maine 93-74 in men’s basketball play Saturday.
Kevin Payette pitched in with 18 points for Rhode Island (15-7) while Davon Yarbrough and Andre Daley added 16 and 15 points respectively.
Bill Hardwick and Mike Francoeur scored 17 points apiece for USM (8-14).
CMCC 100, Vt. Tech 76
CONCORD, N.H. – Chris Brackett scored a dazzling 33 points to lead the Central Maine Community College to a 100-76 win over Vermont Tech in men’s basketball action Saturday.
Taylor Caron recorded a double-double for the Mustangs with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kaleb Violette tossed in 19 points, while Jon Wallingford tabulated 15 points on 4-of-5 field goals from 3-point turf and a free throw.
Jacob Clough and Clark Agnew recorded double-doubles for Vermont Tech, while Chris Taft notched a team-high 16 points.
Women’s basketball
St. Joseph’s 79, Green Mountain 50
STANDISH – Margaret Blauvelt poured in 21 points to lead St. Joseph’s College to a 79-50 win over Green Mountain College Saturday in women’s basketball action.
Laura Pelky chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Kaylin Regula rounded out the scoring with 10 points for the Monks (10-10).
Green Mountain was led by Tanya DeLaMater with 14 points.
Middlebury 66, Colby 59
WATERVILLE – Micaela McVary drained a team-high 17 points to lift Middlebury to a 66-59 win over Colby in women’s basketball action Saturday.
Maryanne Verzosa scored 14 points and Kate Fisher added 13 and four assists for the Panthers (11-13).
Middlebury led 29-25 at halftime. The Panthers went 15-for-23 from the foul line in the second half to help seal the victory.
Colby senior captain Wendy Bonner notched a game-high 21 points on 10-for-15 shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds and earned four assists. Katie McCabe also had a double-double for the Mules (6-17) with 12 points and 14 boards, while Regina Wohl added 13 and three assists.
Bowdoin 71, Williams 69
BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flaherty scored 20 points, including eight from the line, and grabbed nine rebounds as Bowdoin rallied back to win its 50th consecutive game in Morrell Gym with a 71-69 triumph over Williams.
Williams (18-6) took a 43-30 lead into intermission.
Bowdoin (20-2) rallied from a 19-point, second-half deficit to take the lead. Kerri McMahon missed a 3-pointer for the Ephs at the buzzer.
The story for the Polar Bears was rebounds. Justine Pouravelis had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Alison Smith tallied another 10 rebounds.
Bates 70, Trinity 69
HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior forward Olivia Zurek made one of two free throws with four seconds remaining to lift Bates College to a 70-69 victory over Trinity in both teams’ season finale Saturday afternoon.
In a seesaw game, the Bantams (9-13) took a 67-65 lead with two minutes remaining on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Leigh Melanson.
Bates’ senior guard Heather Taylor scored on a put-back to knot up things again at 67-67, before the Bobcats (22-1) applied a full-court press to force a Bantam turnover. Zurek was fouled on a drive to the basket and made both free throws.
With Bates leading 70-69, Trinity sophomore forward Sarah Cox attempted a desperation heave, but the shot fell short as time expired.
USM 90, RIC 51
GORHAM — Megan Myles scored 18 points for the University of Southern Maine as they Huskies beat Rhode Island College 90-51 in women’s basketball on Saturday.
Dawn Ross added nine points for USM (20-2) while Shannon Kynoch, Ashley Marble and Lindsey Welch scored eight points each. Marble also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Kari Geisler led Rhode Island (9-14) with 13 points while Josalee Danieli and Brittany Rosen contributed 10 points apiece.
CMCC 68, Vt. Tech 38
CONCORD, N.H. – Nicole Hutchinson scored a game-high 14 points in a balanced attack as Central Maine Community College rolled over Vermont Tech 68-38 in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Mustangs received double-digit scoring from Ashley Woolford (13), Kate Vincent (12) and Janya Millett (10). Vincent also recorded seven rebounds and seven assists.
Amanda Pickering led Vermont Tech with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Hockey
USM 5, Bowdoin 2
BRUNSWICK – The University of Southern Maine downed Bowdoin College for just the second time in school history with a 5-2 hockey win at Dayton Arena on Saturday.
Brett Kapteina found the back of the net at 5:24 of the second period to give the Huskies (12-9-2) a lead they would never relinquish.
Jon Lounsbury opened the scoring with a goal at 10:29 of the first period for Southern Maine. It would be deep into the second period before the ninth-ranked Polar Bears would solve David Beckles (23 saves) as Greg McConnell scored on a power-play goal at 8:14.
Erik Kent and Mark Carragher rounded out the scoring in the win.
Colby 5, Salem State 1
WATERVILLE – Senior captain Patrick Walsh capped his final regular-season game at Alfond Arena with a hat trick to lift Colby to a 5-1 victory over Salem State Saturday.
Walsh had a pair of goals in the three-goal first period for the Mules (14-6-1). Jared Gordon tallied a goal in the first period and Joel Morash netted a goal in the third period.
Joe Rothwell assisted all three of Walsh’s goals.
Andrew O’Neill scored the lone goal for Salem State (10-10-3). Colby goalie Ben Grandjean made 22 saves for the win.
