WATERVILLE – Olivia Zurek had 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists to lead Bates College to a 75-56 win over Colby College in NESCAC men’s basketball on Saturday.
Zurek went 11-for-14 from the field and 8-for-8 in the first half as the Bobcats (13-1) built a 49-28 lead and never looked back in the lopsided win.
Wendy Bonner led the White Mules (5-8) with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Bowdoin 62, Tufts 48
BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flaherty scored 17 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead Bowdoin College to a 62-48 win over Tufts University in women’s basketball Saturday afternoon.
Erika Nickerson added 13 points as the Polar Bears (12-1) built a 33-24 lead at the end of the first half and never looked back.
The Jumbos (8-4) were led by Laura Jasinski with a team-high 10 points.
UMF 92, Lesley 41
FARMINGTON – Katie LaHaye dropped in a team-high 18 points while Melissa Sawyer and Brandi Rideout scored 14 and 13 points, leading the University of Maine at Farmington to a convincing 92-41 win over Lesley University in women’s basketball action Saturday.
Lesley was led by Anya Vines with 18 points.
Southern Maine 86, UMass-Dartmouth 56
GORHAM — Ashley Marble recorded her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 86-56 win over UMass-Dartmouth.
Katie Frost added 15 points and a game high five assists for the USM Huskies (13-2) in the victory while Megan Myles put up 14 points.
Kerri Augenstein and Ashley Chard paced the Corsairs (8-6) with 12 points apiece.
Men’s basketball
UMF 87, St. Joseph’s 68
FARMINGTON – Steve Ginn and Matt St. John poured in 15 points apiece to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to an 87-68 win over St. Joseph’s College in men’s basketball action.
The Beavers (8-5) held a slim 40-39 lead at the end of the first half but a 48-28 run in the second half put the game out of reach. Former Edward Little center Travis Carrier added 12 points in the win, while Luke Neilsen hauled down 10 boards.
The Monks (7-4) were led by Noah LaRoche with 13 points and five rebounds. Jon Pratt and Marcus Alexander added 11 points apiece to account for the final tally.
Tufts 82, Bowdoin 65
MEDFORD, Mass – Reggie Stovell drained 19 points while Dan Martin added 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead Tufts University to an 82-65 win over Bowdoin College in men’s basketball play.
The Jumbos tallied the first seven points of the game and never looked back as they ran off a 20-9 lead behind Stovell and Martin.
The Polar Bears ( 7-6) were led by Kyle Petrie with a game-high 20 points.
Southern Maine 78, UMass-Dartmouth 59
GORHAM — Jason Levesque scored 24 points for USM as they rolled over UMass-Dartmouth 78-59.
Ryan Garland added 21 points for USM (6-9), having gone 4-4 from the 3-point range.
Amilton Tavares led the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (6-7) with 15 points on five three-point field goals while Chris LaPriore had 14 points and seven steals.
Bates 71, Colby 66
LEWISTON – Brian Gerrity scored a game-high 21 points to lead Bates to a 71-66 win over Colby.
Trailing 33-29 at the break, the Bobcats (11-4) took their first lead at the 15:20 mark of the second half when Zak Ray stole an inbounds pass and drove down the lane to connect on a finger-roll layup for a 40-38 margin.
Gerrity shot 7-for-11 from the field and hit 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, including a big 3-pointer down the stretch to extend Bates’ lead to eight and forced the Mules (9-4) foul in the closing seconds.
Pat McGowan led Colby with a team-high 18 points and seven boards.
Hockey
Williams 2, Bowdoin 1
BRUNSWICK – Despite dominating the play and out-shooting the Ephmen 50-21, Bowdoin fell to Williams 2-1 in NESCAC hockey action Saturday.
The Polar Bears (9-2-1) appeared to be carrying their momentum from Friday’s win over top-ranked Middlebury when Alden Cook struck for a power-play goal just 4:47 into the contest. However, the Ephs executed some outstanding defense, as sophomore goalie Brad Shirley made several sprawling saves.
Following a Bowdoin penalty in the third period, Steve Lunau was able to pounce on a loose puck just outside the crease for the Ephmen (5-7-1) and send the contest into overtime.
Moments after a point-blank chance from Adam Dann that was gloved by Shirley, Williams’ rookie Will Bruce poked a rebound over the goal line to give the Ephs the victory.
Southern Maine 2, Hamilton 2
GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine skated to a 2-2 tie with Hamilton college.
The Continentals (5-4-3) got things started when sophomore defenseman John Gordon converted an assist from Gus Katsuras in the fourth minute of the second period.
The Huskies (7-6-2) answered with back-to-back goals from sophomore forward Chris Sparkes and junior forward James LeBlanc to take a brief 2-1 lead. However, Hamilton knotted up the game for good when Katsuras found the back of the net off an assist from Chris Clarkson and Jeff Vautour.
Colby 2, Middlebury 0
WATERVILLE – Nick Bayley, who led the NESCAC in scoring at the start of the week with 12 goals and 11 assists, scored a pair of goals to lead Colby to a 2-0 shutout over defending champion Middlebury.
Bayley scored the game-winning goal for the Mules (9-2-1) off assists from Joel Morash and Jared Gordon at 9:57 of the third period. He then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal off assists from Eric Molander and Patrick Walsh.
Goalie Chris Ries stopped 24 shots to earn his first shutout of the season, while Middlebury goalie Yen-I Chen made 33 saves in the loss.
Maine 5, Massachusetts 2
AMHERST, Mass. – Bret Tyler scored two goals, including the game-winner, leading Maine to a 5-2 win over Massachusetts on Saturday night.
Tyler’s second goal, on a power play, broke a 2-2 tie midway through the second period. Jimmy Howard, who made 14 saves, held UMass scoreless from there.
Maine (12-8-4, 7-3-2 Hockey East) took a 2-1 first period lead, as Tyler scored at 5:05 and Greg Moore added a power-play goal at 13:11.
Massachusetts (10-12-2, 4-7-2) got on the board on David Leaderer’s power play goal at 15:43 of the first period, and tied the game when Zech Klann scored at 6:30 of the second.
Michel Leveille scored a short-handed goal at 15:46 of the second, and Keith Johnson scored early in the third period for the Black Bears.
Gabe Winer played the first two periods and stopped 23 shots for the Minutemen. Tim Warner stopped 8 shots in relief.
Maine outshot UMass 36-16.
