RUMFORD – Kristin Arsenault scored 18 points in the first half to lead Mountain Valley to a convincing 60-24 win over Carrabec on Tuesday night.
The Falcons’ defense forced 39 turnovers and only allowed two field goals in the first half.
“We knew that we needed to play hard for both halves,” Arsenault said. “We didn’t do that against Boothbay and it cost us. So we knew that we needed to turn up the defense. That had left a sour taste in our mouths.”
Mountain Valley (1-1) had led by 14 points, but Boothbay adjusted and won by three points on Saturday night.
On Tuesday, The Falcons broke things wide open with 19 points in the second quarter.
Arsenault ignited a 12-2 run by burying a jumper, then scored on a Tanya Nicols’ assist. Freshman Tanya Martin buried a three-pointer. Arsenault finished with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Carrabec (0-2) only points came on a Tiffany Gurney 10 points driving lay-up, with 4:55 left in the second quarter.
“A key was getting Kristin the ball early and where she could be effective,” Falcon coach Wade McLaughlin said. “Carrabec had come out in a zone and it scared me because Boothbay had used it on us. But, we recognized it, adjusted and attacked the seams.”
Mountain Valley led 32-6 at halftime.
The big lead allowed the Falcons to use the entire bench in the second half.
Devon Allen scored 10 points and added three assists and three steals. Kim Clark had seven rebounds and Sasha Theriault scored three baskets in the fourth quarter.
“We only have two seniors,” McLaughlin said. “At one point, we had four freshmen out on the floor, getting playing time.”
