BATH – The running game killed Oak Hill on both sides of the football Friday, from its inability to execute on offense to its inability to stop the run on defense.
Shawn Perkins and Jared Dunn combined for 280 yards on the ground for Morse as the Shipbuilders racked up 376 yards of total offense, running over the Raiders 49-6 on Friday night.
Both teams finish the regular season out of the playoff picture with identical 4-5 records.
“They are a solid football team,” said Oak Hill coach Bruce Nicholas. “They gave undefeated Brewer its best game of the year; they went up 14-0 on Belfast early. They are a good team, much better than their record shows. They are learning how to win football games, and they showed that tonight.”
On offense, Oak Hill mustered just 126 of total offense and turned the ball over four times.
“We had two guys missing on offense, and that hurt,” said Nicholas. “We figured we might go to the air, but we threw it right to them, and then they were loading the box with nine or 10 guys every time. We were like, uh-oh.'” The punishment started early as Morse capitalized on its first two drives and were ahead 15-0 less than nine minutes into the game on two Perkins touchdowns. Perkins finished with 131 yards on 20 carries and three TDs.
“We ran the ball well and controlled the game with it,” said Morse coach Greg Nadeau. “We had planned to run outside a lot more than we did, but it turns out we didn’t have to. They were giving us the A and B gaps.”
Dunn scored his first of two touchdowns in the second quarter, and near the end of the half Rick Alexander hauled in a 24-yard pass from Dan Sigurdson (5 of 9, two TDs) to give the Shipbuilders a 29-0 halftime lead.
Oak Hill started the second half well, scoring a touchdown on its first possession when Wally Rines scampered 22 yards.
That would be all Oak Hill would manage, though, as Morse ran off another 20 points to close out the game.
