WALES – In 2003, the Winslow Black Raiders used a power running game to wear down opponents.
This year’s rendition employs quickness and deception to achieve the same results. Saturday, the Black Raiders ran through the Oak Hill Raider defense for 322 yards to earn a 40-7 win.
“We were a power team last year,” said Winslow coach Mike Siviski. “We had three fullbacks over 200 pounds. Sometimes we used all three of them at once. We made a lot of changes to adapt to the kids. We do the same things differently.”
Oak Hill began the game with a successful onside kick. Five plays later, fullback Eric Daniels (51 yards rushing) barreled up the middle for a 31-yard score.
After spotting Oak Hill (3-4) the early lead, Winslow (5-2) got rolling. The Black Raiders scored on their first three possessions and went up 19-7 with drives of 58, 26 and 66 yards.
Ryan Lindie (26 carries for 140 yards) exploded through holes to keep the chains moving.
When he wasn’t getting the ball, Lindie served as a decoy. Quarterback Stephen Siviski would fake a handoff to Lindie, drawing a host of Raiders tacklers.
Justin Lindie (70 yards rushing) was the chief benefactor of the deception as he churned out 31 yards on the opening drive. His 10-yard touchdown run was the first of his two scores.
“They fake it very well,” said Oak Hill coach Bruce Nicholas. “They’re really very fast. That’s the type of team that hurts us.”
Late in the first quarter, Winslow forced Oak Hill to punt from deep within its own territory. The Black Raiders took over on the Raider 26 and scored three plays later. A 12-yard gain by Justin Lindie and a Siviski 13-yard run set up Ryan Lindie’s score from a yard out.
The next time Winslow got the ball, they shredded Oak Hill’s defense with Justin Lindie capping the scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
The Black Raiders continued their offensive prowess in the third quarter. Josh McLean’s second interception of the day gave Winslow the ball on the Oak Hill 35. A Siviski to Eric Lopez 31-yard reception set up Ryan Lindie’s 4-yard touchdown run.
Lindie’s third score came minutes later after Lopez picked off a Josh Jillson pass and returned it 45 yards to the Oak Hill 36.
Six plays later, Lindie burst through the middle for a 7-yard score and Winslow led 33-7.
A 48-yard scamper by back-up quarterback Andy Wheeler completed the scoring.
“This was a huge game for us,” said Ryan Lindie. “We’re really looking for a home playoff game.”
