RUMFORD – Mountain Valley scored on their first six possessions in the first half to cruise past Fryeburg, 49-6, on Friday night.
Aaron Arsenault and Travis Fergola each rushed for two touchdowns.
The steady drizzle made for tricky footing, but the sparse crowd certainly received their money’s worth.
The Falcons’ defense held the Raiders to minus 30 yards in the first 24 minutes.
Chris Lever, Brandon Bradley, Kyle Dow and Fergola led the defense.
Mountain Valley (6-1) struck paydirt on its fourth play from scrimmage, as Korey Stairs hauled in a 52-yard pass from quarterback Zach Fergola. Stairs had cleared the secondary on a crossing route.
“That set the tone,” Stairs said. “It proved that we could be effective by either running or passing the ball. It didn’t matter that I was the one who caught the TD pass, because it could have been any one of my teammates. This team has played well so far this season, and we’re confident that we can go far in the playoffs.” Mountain Valley scored again one minute later as Aaron Arsenault fell on a blocked punt in the end zone.
Pat Knapp broke in and got a hand on the punt by Nathan Boyer.
Ben Madigan kicked his second of seven extra points.
Arsenault (69 yards, nine rushes) ran in from seven and nine yards. Chris Smith also gained 69 yards on nine carries.
“There was no letdown today,” Arsenault said, referring to last week’s win over Wells. “We knew that we had to come out and get the job done tonight. Everyone hit hard.”
Fryeburg (2-5) punted after three plays on its first six possessions.
Quarterback Finn Chappell was constantly hurried and the Raiders didn’t earn a first down until the fourth quarter.
Sequoyah Reynoso broke free for a 45-yard TD run late in the game for the Raiders.
The Falcon back-ups played the entire second half. Andy Shorey and Matthew Lyons split time under center. Devin Roberts scored on a 60-yard sprint.
Travis Fergola, normally a guard, scored on runs of two and one yard. “I thought our intensity level was the difference tonight,” Fergola said. “We came out with a lot of it and I’m really proud of the team’s performance.”
