TURNER – In a game that featured nearly as many penalties and turnovers as points, Leavitt came up with enough big plays to top the Morse Shipbuilders 16-6 Friday night.

It was a wet and dreary night as both teams combined for 14 turnovers. Neither team generated much offense in the first quarter. Chris Brewer finally got Leavitt on the scoreboard when he intercepted an Micah Loveitt pass in the flats and raced 80 yard with 20 seconds to play in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Morse’s Jared Dunn pick up the ball on the 30-yard line, broke to the outside and scored his team’s only points as the quarter came to an end.

“We knew the weather was going to be a factor,” said Morse coach Greg Nadeau.

Neither team could sustain a drive in the second quarter and the half ended in a 6-6 tie.

Picking up where it left off in the first half, Leavitt fumbled the ball away on the kickoff to start the second half. Morse returned the favor two plays later.

The Hornets took control of the game on their next series when quarterback Matt Cote hooked up with Matt Worcester for a 55-yard pass play to the 5-yard line.

“We were looking at their coverage trying to find the right spot to call that play,” said Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway.

Two plays later Cote spotted Corey Witham open in the end zone for a 5-yard scoring toss to give Leavitt a 13-6 lead.

“We knew there were a couple of pass patterns we couldn’t cover,” said Nadeau. “They were able to make a couple more plays than we were.”

Leavitt’s final score came on a Chris Brewer 22-yard field goal.

“Our focus at halftime was to cut down on our penalties and fumbles,” said Hathaway. “We did a better job of that in the second half.”

Leavitt (5-2) finishes up its regular season with road games against undefeated Brewer and once beaten Mountain Valley.

“We have two very tough road games left, with teams that are No. 1 in their divisions,” said Hathaway. “We’re going to have to play our best.”
