AUBURN – American Legion baseball might be played at Pettengill Park this summer after all. Organizers for New Auburn Post 153 have been given a brief window of opportunity by state Legion baseball officials to put together a team, according to Jack Ricker, who has managed the New Auburn team for the last three years.
“(Coach) Bob Blackman and I are trying to get a team together. We’ve been given 48 hours by the state. We have until Monday afternoon to let them know if we can go ahead,” Ricker said.
Ricker plans to hold tryouts at Pettengill this Tuesday afternoon and hopes to have a team ready to play later in the week.
“We’re trying to put a team on the field by Thursday, so we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Ricker said. “It’s going to be a hard job, and a lot of things have to happen quickly. I just want kids on the ballfield and I’d love to see them play.”
New Auburn Post 153 commander Tibby Dupuis said Friday that his post would not be able to field a team this season because it didn’t have a coach and was pessimistic about finding one in time for the start of the season, which is Tuesday.
New Auburn is scheduled to play Cole Farms in its season opener. Ricker said he hopes to get that game rescheduled and have the team take the field for their next scheduled game against Poland. Tuesday’s games involving the six other teams in Zone III, Bessey Motors at Gayton Post, Locke Mills at Andy Valley and Poland at Smith-Tobey (Mid-Coast) will go on as scheduled.
Players from Edward Little born on or after Jan. 1, 1985 are eligible for the New Auburn team. Anyone looking for more information can call Ricker at 786-7652.
