AUBURN – Emily Goss had a solid day both on the mound and behind the plate, striking out seven batters and going 3-for-3 to lead St. Dom’s to a 6-3 triumph over Winthrop in softball playoff action Tuesday afternoon.
Goss hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to post two RBIs in the contest. She also hit a single and a triple, and scored two runs for the Saints (12-3).
Katie Pussard paced the Winthrop effort, going 2-for-3 and tallying one RBI.
Lisbon 8, Carrabec 3
LISBON – Andrea Piela and Belle Mathieu combined for four hits and three RBIs to lead eighth-ranked Lisbon to an 8-3 victory over ninth-ranked Carrabec in a Western Class C softball preliminary Tuesday.
Mathieu belted out an RBI single in the first to put the Greyhounds (9-7) on the board. Then Piela smacked a two-run triple in the second to make it 5-1. Jen Hogan struck out six and walked two while earning the win.
Kathy Reed led the Cobras (7-8) with four hits on the day. Marci Williams went the distance on the hill, allowing five hits while taking the loss.
Mt. Abram 6, Livermore Falls 2
LIVERMORE FALLS – Shortstop Loghan Walker had a solid day both defensively and behind the plate, tallying three RBIs throughout the contest and making key catches, to lift Mt. Abram to a 6-2 triumph over Livermore Falls in Class C Preliminary softball action Tuesday afternoon.
The Roadrunners (10-7) capitalized and scored on all five of the Andies’ (11-6) errors. Stephanie Hood led off the scoring in the first inning where she came home on a passed ball.
Walker recorded two of her three RBIs in the first with a two-run single to the right field. Katie Walker had a solid day on the mound for Mt. Abram.
Livermore Falls was paced by Taryn Flagg with a triple, and Valen Richards, who hit a double. Marjorie Debroksy recorded two hits and was the lone repeat hitter of the game.
Poland 4, Lincoln 1
POLAND – Kelli O’Connor fanned 11 batters to post a 4-1 Poland victory over Lincoln, giving the Knights their first Western Class B playoff win in the team’s history Tuesday afternoon.
Lincoln stranded 13 batters and left the bases loaded twice in both the first and sixth innings to help propel the Knights. O’Connor ended four of her innings by striking out Lincoln batters. Kasey Darnell recorded one RBI for the game.
The Lincoln effort was led by Cassi Berry and Alex Wajer, each with multiple hits for the losing cause.
Messalonskee 1, Oxford Hills 0
OAKLAND – Lauren Blake belted out an RBI single in the seventh inning to send Cindy Bouchard across the plate and lift fifth-ranked Messalonskee to a 1-0 victory over 12th-ranked Oxford Hills in an Eastern Class A preliminary round Tuesday.
Megan Goodrow led the Eagles with a pair of hits.
Randi Arsenault went the distance for the Vikings and took the loss.
Lacrosse
Brunswick 10, Lewiston 8
BRUNSWICK – Fran Shirley scored an insurance goal with six seconds on the clock to give Brunswick a 10-8 win over Lewiston in lacrosse action on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
The contest went back and forth throughout, with Brunswick scoring three unanswered goals to end the first half of the game to make it 7-4. Lewiston came from behind to post an 8-7 lead within minutes of the second half.
Heidi Mills then netted the tying Brunswick goal with eight minutes left. Mary Vaughan scored the go-ahead goal with 5:30 remaining before Shirley netted the game-winner for the Dragons (8-5). Jessie Hyde tallied three goals, while Hillary Croston and Mills combined for four. Vaughan, Shirley, and Becky Halmo each chipped in with a goal a piece.
Lewiston was paced by Gen Lysen with four goals. Marina MacDonald, Kelsey Varney, and Becky Tardif combined to make up the difference for the Blue Devils.
Yarmouth 20, Mountain Valley 3
YARMOUTH – Michelle Habem tallied five goals as Yarmouth dominated Mountain Valley, posting a triumphant 20-3 victory in lacrosse playoff action Tuesday.
The Falcons held Yarmouth to a 4-1 lead until the Clippers blew the contest open with six minutes remaining in the first half. Molly Dilworth netted four goals, while Molly Hallweaver, Julia Libby, Aylie Baker, and Chrissy Attura each chipped in with two goals a piece. Sara Hagstrom, Emily Johnson, and Sara Michelle each added a goal.
Jessica Allen notched two goals, while Sam Johnson scored one for the Mountain Valley (6-9).
