The left-hander helps his own cause by driving in a pair in a shutout victory.

FARMINGTON – Southpaw Zack Jacques pitched a two-hit complete game as Cony continued rolling with a 3-0 win over Mt. Blue in the rain at Hippach Field.

Jacques was equally effective offensively, going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. Cony improved to 10-1 this season.

Mt. Blue (9-3) batters simply couldn’t catch up to Jacques blazing fastball. Still, the Cougars only trailed 1-0 entering the sixth inning.

“The team hung in there,” Mt. Blue coach Gary Parlin said. “Jacques is a strong pitcher and the Cony defense was solid behind him. We knew that we weren’t going to string together three hits, so we put in a couple pinch runners to try and get some thing going.” Jacques (5-0) gave up a solid single to Jake Hardy leading off the second inning and Alex Martin beat out an infield hit with two outs in the fourth. Jacques responded by inducing three-straight ground balls in the second and struck out Matt Tripp to end the fourth.

Cony scored a run in the first as Craig Cameron drew a two-out walk off Cougar starter Ben Saviello. Cameron stole second base, advanced on a wild pitch and trotted home on Jacques’ single.

“Zack Jacques pitched a strong game,”Cony coach Rex Turner said. “A key for him was getting ahead in the count because he throws hard. We didn’t hit that well as a team today, but we had some clutch hits and we also able to manufacture some runs.”

Saviello pitched out of several jams-including bases loaded in the fourth, but was hindered by control problems.

“Ben pitched well enough at times,” Parlin said. ” I was also surprised to see (Chris Grant) get hit that that hard, but he’s been our reliever all season and we have confidence in him.”

Cony scored two runs in the seventh on a Jacques’ double and Davis’ single against Grant.
