NAUMBURG, Germany – USAF Capt. Kevin Eastler of Farmington broke the Olympic A’ standard again to lead Team USA at the World Cup of Racewalking Sunday.
Eastler and teammate and Olympian Tim Seaman walked together for the first 15 kilometers at a pace calculated to bring Seaman in under the A’ qualifying standard of 1:23.
But that didn’t happen. Seaman hit the wall with four kilometers to go and finished with a 1:24:21, just under the time necessary to get a B’ standard.
Eastler took off with four kilometers to go and finished in his second straight international A’ standard, this time with a 1:22:51. His PR is 1:22:25. Eastler was in 46th place at five kilometers with a split of 20:38, 36th at 10 kilometers with a 41:14, 31st at 15 kilometers with a split of 1:01:55, and finished 26th out of 188 walkers from around the world.
Seaman finished 39th and their Norwegian training partner Eric Tysse, who started the race in fine fashion, hit the wall and finished in 62nd with a 1:28:15.
Eastler, Seaman, and Olympian Curt Clausen (1:25:39) brought the USA to a ninth-place team finish overall, much better than their 12th-place finish in the 2002 World Cup outing in Torino, Italy.
Seaman will attempt an A’ standard one more time at a meet in Germany about a month from now. Eastler is headed back to Colorado to be with his pregnant wife Sara and to continue training for the Olympic Trials in July. Clausen has already made the 2004 Olympic team by winning the 50-kilometer Olympic Trials earlier this year.
