GORHAM – Southern Maine’s Brian Marshall and Tip Fairchild each hit three-run home runs to propel the Huskies to a 12-4 win over St Joseph’s.

Adam Lemieux hit two doubles and had three RBIs for Southern Maine (21-8-1). Aaron Cieslak knocked in two runs and hit a triple for the Monks (14-21).

Bates splits doubleheader with St. Joseph’s

LEWISTON – Carolyn King hit an RBI single to center field to give the Bates softball team a 4-3 win in the eighth inning of the first game, but the Bobcats (7-18) ran out of late-inning heroics in game two, falling to St. Joseph’s 6-5 in the nightcap on Lafayette Field on Thursday afternoon.

Allyson Ferguson gave the Monks (10-29) a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth with a two-out double to right field, scoring Jaime Daugherty. Bates came right back in the bottom of the inning, with Dayna Krakower knocking in Caitlyn Murphy with a single to right to tie the score. King pushed the winning run across the plate, sending Kyla Decato home from third with a two-out single to center.

The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead when Murphy scored on a double steal and Krakower hit an RBI single through the middle in the third inning. Bates pitcher Sarah Klenakis was perfect through four innings, but the Monks had four consecutive hits to tie the score the score in the fifth.

St. Joseph’s held off a late comeback attempt to beat the Bobcats in game two. The Monks took advantage of four Bates errors, scoring four unearned runs on Bobcat pitcher Kristin Masino.

Trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh, Bates mustered a pair of base runners, but only Decato was able to score on a sacrifice fly by King. Kahler Dowling went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Monks.

Maine 0-2, Boston University 3-0

ORONO – Amy Kuhl hit a two-out double in the top of the 10th inning, driving in two runs which proved enough for Maine as they took the second game of a double header with Boston University 2-0. BU had taken the earlier game 3-0.

Brittany Cheney singled with one out in the 10th and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Molly McKinney was then walked, putting runners at first and second for Maine. Kuhl’s double then drove in Cheney and McKinney as the winning runs.

Jenna Merchant tossed the complete game for Maine, allowing seven hits and striking out 12. Merchant runs her record to 6-4 on the year, and Maine improves to 20-19 overall, and 7-7 in America East.

In the early game, Liz Alley doubled in the opening frame scoring Abbey Pauley, who had reached base on a walk. Pauley’s score proved all the Terriers would need, though they crossed the plate with two more insurance runs later in the contest.

Sarah Bennis took the loss for Maine, hurt by seven walks, but allowing only three hits and striking out seven on the day.

Southern Maine, sweeps

KEENE, N.H. – In the first game Jen Cordone was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 20th inning to bring home Emily Forbes as Southern Maine beats Eastern Connecticut 2-1 in 20 innings. Renee Heath hit a home run for the Huskies.

Shari D’Amico hit an RBI double for Eastern Connecticut which brought Leigha Abair home to tie the game in the top of the sixth.

In the Second game it stayed scoreless until the top of the 11th when Caterina Riitano singled in Darci Holland for the game-winning run. Then it was Emily Forbes with an RBI single to bring home Riitano. Meghan McLoughlin pitched 10 scoreless innings before giving up the two runs in the 11th.
