Katie Mainville throws a two-hit shutout for USM.
GORHAM – Katie Mainville twirled a two-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking one, in the opener as the University of Southern Maine completed a sweep of Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut State University in women’s softball action Saturday.

The Huskies scored a 3-0 win in Game 1 and added a 6-3 come-from-behind win in the night cap.

Southern Maine grabbed a 2-0 lead when Kristen Tong stroked a two-out, two-run double in the first inning, and Darci Holland added an insurance run in the fifth to secure the win.

The night cap saw the Huskies come from behind with a five-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning on five consecutive hits, including three doubles from Jess Becher, Kristen Tong, and Darci Holland to complete the sweep.

Melissa Henderson notched the win, fanning six, walking one, while surrendering seven hits in the victory.
Bowdoin wins two
BRUNSWICK – Erin Hanley pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout and struck out eight batters as Bowdoin beat St. Joseph’s 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Britney Carr went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Danielle Chagnon had two RBI for the Polar Bears (16-6). Sarah Martin and Amanda Roy had St. Joseph’s only two hits in the game.

In the second game, Emily Nelson pitched a complete game, one-hitter and struck out seven to lead Bowdoin to a 6-0 victory over St. Joseph’s. Megan Wyman boosted the offense ,going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI for the Polar Bears (17-6). Deborah Bain had the only hit for St. Joseph’s (5-20).
Baseball

Tufts, Bowdoin spilt
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin pinch hitter Andrew Workman hit a game-winning, three-run homer as the Polar Bears beat Tufts 5-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Tom McMahon also hit and a home run for Bowdoin (16-8). Matt Clement went 2-for-3 and Bob Kenny had an RBI for Tufts (11-10).

Tufts came back to win the second game with help from Chris Decembrele who went 2-for-6 with a solo home run as the Jumbos beat Bowdoin 7-6 in 11 innings. John Rothermel went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Tufts (12-10). Bowdoin got home runs from Jared Lemieux and Tom McMahon. Nick Lawler of Auburn went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Polar Bears (16-9).
USM sweeps
GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine was led by Joe McGhee who hit a home run and had three RBI as the Huskies pounded Keene State 17-0 in the first game of a baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

Marc Cahill pitched a complete game shutout to improve his record to 2-3 on the season.

Rick Stromgren started the game for Keene State and got the loss.

In the second game, Tip Fairchild pitched a complete game shutout for the Huskies as they beat Keene State 5-0. Fairchild did not allow a hit until the fifth inning when Keene State’s Matt Beam singled to center to break up the no-hitter.

Brandon Brewer and Adam Lemieux each had three hits for Southern Maine (13-8-1).
Maine 2, Hartford 1
BANGOR – The University of Maine handed Hartford University a 2-1 setback in college baseball at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor behind a strong pitching performance from Mike MacDonald Saturday.

MacDonald went eight innings for the Black Bears (15-14), striking out 15, before giving way to Scott Robinson in the ninth inning to preserve the win.

Joel Barrett went 3-4 and Aaron Izaryk added a pair of hits in the victory.
Men’s lacrosse

Tufts 10, Colby 4
WATERVILLE – Billy Granger scored three goals and had two assists to lead Tufts to a 10-4 victory over Colby in college men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Mark Warner and Devin Clarke scored two goals each for Tufts (8-2).

Joshua Cleaver netted a goal and had an assist for Colby (7-3).
Keene State 19, USM 0
KEENE, N.H. – Keene State’s Joe Branciforte dominated the game, scoring seven goals with three assists, as the Owls pounded the University of Southern Maine 19-0 in a men’s lacrosse matchup on Saturday.

Keene State (7-4) also received two goals from Eric Momnie, Roy Jones and Greg Richard.

Jeff Lamoureux had nine saves for the Huskies (4-6).
Bowdoin 11, Middlebury 10
BRUNSWICK – Carl Klimpt scored the game-winning, overtime goal on a pass from Connor Fitzgerald to lift Bowdoin to an 11-10 victory over Middlebury in men’s lacrosse Saturday.

Fitzgerald netted three goals and had two assists for the Polar Bears (7-2).

Charley Howe, Andrew Giordano and Mark Foster each scored two goals for Middlebury (9-1).
Women’s lacrosse

Middlebury 14, Bowdoin 5
Middlebury, Vt. – Nuala O’Donohoe netted four goals to lead Middlebury to a 14-5 win over Bowdoin in women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

Elizabeth Renehan also added three for Middlebury (11-0).

Bowdoin (8-5) was led by Angela King who scored two goals.
UMass-Dartmouth 16, USM 4
GORHAM – Megan Corfield tailed five goals as University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth rolled past the University of Southern Maine 16-4 in women’s lacrosse Saturday.

Katelyn Sullivan and Katelyn Elliott netted three goals apiece for the Corsairs (7-3). Southern Maine’s (2-7) Justene Larnerd scored two goals.
