CLEARWATER, Fla. – Senior Tim Roehrig clobbered a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to break an 8-8 tie as Ripon College went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 11-9, in baseball action Saturday afternoon.

After being held in check for the first six innings by the Huskies’ freshman right-hander Josh Armandi of Jay, the Red Hawks put together their first of two five-run, come-from-behind innings to take a 6-5 lead.

Bates drops pair

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Bates College baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Ramapo in the final two games of its Florida trip on Saturday, falling to the Roadrunners 6-5 in the opener and 5-4 in the night cap.

The Bobcats (2-3) missed an opportunity in the first game, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but grounded into a double play to end the inning. Senior Nate Maxwell led the Bobcat offense in the first game, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Softball

USM 8, NEC 0

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine’s Katie Mainville pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout as the Huskies pounded New England College 8-0 in softball action Saturday.

Angela Cote hit a home run for the Huskies to boost their offense. Renne Heath, Darci Holland and Christian Lachappelle each had two base hits for Southern Maine (4-1).

USM 8, Buffalo State 7

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Renne Heath crushed a solo home run for the University of Southern Maine as it slipped past Buffalo State 8-7 in a college softball matchup Saturday. Ashley Woodcock, Kristen Tong and Renne Heath each batted in two runs for the Huskies (5-1).

Laurie Hutten and Lindsey Matheis knocked in two runs each for Buffalo State (4-4).

Mens’ lacrosse

USM 6, Maine Maritime 3

CASTINE – Junior attack Matt Butler scored three goals to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 6-3 win over Maine Maritime Academy in the teams’ season opener Saturday afternoon.

Butler snapped a 3-3 tie in the second quarter with the first of his three goals. Junior Mark St. John put the Huskies (1-0) on the board first 63 seconds into the contest. The Mariners (0-1) responded to St. John’s goal with three unanswered tallies to take a 3-1 lead after one.

Sophomore goalie Jeff Lamoureux had a strong game in net for the Huskies, making 19 saves to earn the win.
