Oxford Hills center Corey Tielinen is one of three finalists for Maine’s Mr. Basketball announced Wednesday.
Brunswick guard Ralph Mims and Portland forward Rocco Toppi are the other two finalists, which are chosen by a five-person committee that reviews the top nominated players selected by coaches from around the state.
Tielinen averaged 21.7 points per game while leading Oxford Hills to the most wins in a single season in school history. The Vikings (18-1) are the top seed in the Eastern Class A tournament and face No. 4 Bangor Friday night at the Bangor Auditorium.
Mims, the KVAC’s Player of the Year and 2003 Sun Journal Player of the Year, led the Dragons to the KVAC championship and this Friday’s Eastern A semifinals.
A four-year starter, Mims led the 18-1 Dragons in virtually every statistical category this season, averaging 28.6 points, 11 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 4.5 steals and 4 blocks per game. He is being recruited by several Division I colleges, including Florida State, Providence, Cincinnati, South Carolina and Oklahoma.
Toppi has been the key to Portland’s 18-1 record and its appearance in this Friday’s Western A semifinals.
He finished second in the SMAA in scoring, averaging 17.2 ppg, and also ranked in the league’s top 10 in rebounding (8.1 per game), steals (2.8) and free throw percentage (64.4 percent).
The Miss Basketball finalists are Greely’s Abby Marstaller, Kara Borelli of Westbrook and Ericka Stupinski of Mt. Ararat.
Mr. and Miss Basketball honor the state’s top high school senior basketball players.
The award will be announced at the Maine McDonald’s All-Star Basketball Banquet, Friday, March 19 at Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium. The McDonald’s A/B and C/D boys’ and girls’ basketball games will be held the following day at Husson.
