Heavy snow blanketed most of Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire on Tuesday, forcing the closure of hundreds of schools and making roads slick as the vehicle crash count mounted.
Lewiston police Lt. Dave St. Pierre said nine crashes were reported in that city between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. He said none was serious.
Close to a foot of snow had fallen in some areas of northern New England by mid-afternoon, while the precipitation switched over to rain in other spots.
Snowfall totals from 6:30 p.m. Tuesday measured nearly 4 inches in Auburn, 3 in Lewiston, 2 in Lisbon Falls, and 6 in Lovell, according to the National Weather Service.
Central and northern New Hampshire, western Maine and eastern Vermont all were under a winter storm warning from the weather service at midday Tuesday. Western Vermont, southern and coastal New Hampshire and most of southern, coastal and eastern Maine were under a winter weather advisory.
Jenna Daigenault of Lewiston said she loved the snow day. “I’ve been inside snuggling my pup all day, except for going out to vote,” she said.
Stephen Amaroso, a teacher at St. Dominic Academy, said that from a teacher’s standpoint, “There is a lot going on this time of year, getting ready for finals, for holidays, etc. Having a day to exhale at home did not hurt my feelings.”
“Now if it was to throw off the exam schedule, that would be different,” he said. “And being home with five pets who follow me around and don’t listen to me, it was like being at school.”
Theresa Theriault of Millinocket said she was happy with the snow, too. “I had a half-day at work and it was fabulous! Snowy days are always fun because everyone is just more excited than usual,” she said.
High temperatures for the rest of the week are forecast to be below 30 degrees Fahrenheit, and the National Weather Service said that any slush left from Tuesday’s storm will likely freeze solid.
“Shovel tonight if you can,” the weather service advised.
