EUGENE, Ore. – Six Maine racewalkers from Eastport to South Berwick brought home two silver medals and four bronze medals from the Junior Olympics National Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field (home field of the famous Steve Prefontaine) this past week.
Matthew Forgues of Boothbay captured second place in the Midget Boys 1,500-meter racewalk with a time of 8:03.72 while Padric Gleason of Dresden captured second place in the Intermediate Boys 5,000-meter event in 27:26.93.
Greg Pola, from the Elan School in Poland took sixth in the Young Men’s 5,000-meter racewalk in 32:45.25.
Lauren Forgues of Boothbay and Eastport’s Helen Pottle from took fourth and fifth in the intermediate girls 5k race with 27:45.33 and 28:40.10, respectively.
Kate Dickinson, a University of Maine at Farmington sophomore from South Berwick, grabbed fourth place in the young woman’s 5,000-meter racewalk with a time of 30:48.07.
Maine’s contingent continues to score well at national competitions.
The Junior Olympics Nationals is the largest track and field meet in the world with over 5,000 athletes competing in one or more events (close to 8,000 entries).
