LEWISTON – A peek over the partition separating the Colisee staff from the Lewiston Maineiacs’ staff will net you a look at a large, white dry-erase board. On it are names. Lots of names in red, black, blue and green ink.

Some are smudged, some have lines or a circle around them, and still others are listed under the inauspicious category of “maybe.”

The names are those of hockey players between the ages of 15 and 20, and the staff is using the list as an organizational tool for the upcoming training camp, which starts on Thursday, Aug. 12.

There are notable names missing from the list, as well as notable additions that will certainly pique the interest of local hockey fans.

Who is missing: The first obvious omission from the list is 20-year-old goaltender Matt Davis. While his name floated in the “goalie” column for much of the summer, there is a note next to his name signifying that he is not invited to training camp.

Also missing is Vladislav Balaz, who has also been asked not to return. Reports suggest that Pierre-Luc Faubert will not return of his own volition, choosing instead to remain in Canada.

The players who are not at camp are not officially released from the team’s official 54-man roster, however, meaning that their rights in the QMJHL remain with Lewiston.

Who will be at camp: Every other player on the active roster from last season will be invited back, as will some players who saw very little for the team. Some of those names include goaltenders D.J. DelBuono and Maxime Joyal, forwards Mathieu Lemire, Kevin Turgeon and Brett Woodland, and defensemen Maxime Brunet and Mathieu Lafleur.

Sheldon Wenzel, last year the fan favorite, will return to camp as a 20-year-old, as will Bobby Gates and Nicolas Cowan.

All of the drafted players from the 2004 Entry Draft have also agreed to join the team at camp, including No. 1 pick Jonathan Bernier and Stefan Chaput.

Local presence: There will again be a local presence at training camp, just as there was last year. This time, four local players are scheduled to participate in at least the first two days of training camp.

Kirk Bolduc, 19, played last year for the Portland Junior Pirates and will play this upcoming season for Cornwall of Ontario; Tyler Martin, 17, will re-join his St. Dom’s teammates this coming season; Nate Frechette, 17, played at Winthrop-Hall Dale last season and was their leading scorer; and Colby Gilbert, 19, graduated from Edward Little in June after helping to lead that team to back-to-back state Class A titles.

Welcome to Lewiston

The Lewiston Maineiacs will open their 2004 Training Camp on Wednesday, August 11 with a fan rally at Courthouse Plaza on Lisbon Street in Lewiston from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The 68 players (invites & draft picks) who will be participating at this year’s camp will be introduced. Following the introductions and some brief comments from Maineiacs’ management, fans will have the chance to mingle with this year’s group of prospects.

“This season marks the start of a new chapter for the Lewiston Maineiacs, and we want to take every opportunity to bring the players closer to our fans,” said Matt McKnight, the team’s Vice President & Governor.

Youth clinic added

The Lewiston Maineiacs have added another event to the already busy schedule surrounding training camp: a youth hockey clinic.

Former players Francis Trudel (last year’s captain) and Gabriel Balasescu (last year’s assistant captain) will be running the clinic along with three local collegiate players: Joey Dumais of Auburn (Quinnipiac University), Steve Roop of Lewiston (Elmira College), and Jamie Gilbert of Lewiston (University of Massachusetts-Amherst).

According to the team’s release, the hockey clinic will last four days with four sessions of two hours each. The first hour will have three stations, one in the offensive, neutral, and defensive zones, where the players will rotate until they have participated in each station. For the second hour of the hockey clinic the players will partake in a scrimmage. There are limited spots available in each of three divisions: Birth year 1992-93, birth year 1994-95, and a Girls U-14.

The clinic includes eight hours of ice time (4 hours instructional, 4 hours scrimmage), a Maineiacs Hockey Clinic team jersey, free admission to all 2004 Lewiston Maineiacs training camp games, and an autographed picture of Francis Trudel and Gabriel Balasescu. The cost of the clinic is $100, and those interested are asked to contact Chris Manson in the Maineiacs’ office.
