MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Led by Jerred Smithson’s goal and assist, the Manchester Monarchs won their first game of the season Wednesday 3-1 over the Portland Pirates.

Matthieu Chouinard stopped 22 shots for the victory.

The two teams traded third-period goals. The Pirates got on the board when Chris Hajt scored a power-play goal with under seven minutes to play.

The Monarchs responded three minutes later when Smithson restored the Monarchs’ two-goal cushion.

After scoring the only goal in the first period, the Monarchs extended the lead nine minutes into the second when Smithson won a face-off directly back to Joe Rullier, who scored past Maxime Ouellet.
