LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen voted Monday to create a Santa’s Workshop Committee to oversee the holiday parade and a workshop for children to buy gifts for family members in December.

The board named Selectman Jackie Knight as chairwoman. Other members are Rachel LaBrecque, Carmen Cullen and Barbara Cook. The committee will serve for a year.

The board’s sanctioning of the committee means the parade that ushers Santa in on a firetruck down Main Street in Jay and Livermore Falls will be covered by the town’s insurance, Town Manager Jim Chaousis said.

The Spirit of the Season Parade, Christmas tree lighting and Coats for Kids project was formerly under the auspices of the Livermore Falls-Jay Rotary Club, which has disbanded.

There was also a Santa’s Workshop implemented last year, where people donated items and children could buy them for 25 cents or so. The workshop was held in the bank building where the former Androscoggin Bank Loan Department was located. The kids could also have those presents gift-wrapped.

Knight said she checked on insurance for a one-day event last year, and it was between $200 and $400. The workshop raised $200 last year, she said.

Select board Chairwoman Louise Chabot said, “I am really an advocate for town growth and community involvement. It was successful last year. It was a good project,” including Coats for Kids.

Money raised from the tree lighting, where bulbs are sold in memory or honor of a loved one, buys coats for kids in the Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls schools.

The plan this year is to have the parade on Saturday, Dec. 5, and the workshop on Sunday, Dec. 6.

In other business, selectmen voted to enter into a 10-year contract with the Maine Department of Transportation to plow and control icing on sections of state highways. The state will pay the town $6,800 each year — that figure can be negotiated annually — to plow 1.6 miles on routes 4, 17 and 133.

The board also learned that current dispatch Supervisor Amanda Leclerc of Livermore Falls has been hired as the administrative assistant in the Police Department. The position was created to continue needed services after dispatch closes. She will be paid $12.95 an hour, Chaousis said.

Selectmen also approved posting bid specifications for a 10- by 12-foot building for the transfer station attendant. It will be weatherproofed, have heat, windows and a door. It will replace the shack the attendant has now.
