ORONO – Shaunessy Saucier converted on the third shot of sudden death to lift the Maine women’s field hockey team past Ohio State 2-1 Sunday.Megan Connolly put Maine (1-0) on the board first, redirecting a Emily Dooling pass to beat the Buckeye keeper and give Maine the early 1-0 lead. Ohio State (0-1) tied things up 20 minutes later as Yesenia Luces beat keeper, Jamie Morin.

Neither team could find the net in overtime, and it came down to sudden death penalty strokes. In sudden death, both teams made their first two shots. Saucier took Maine’s third shot and scored. Ohio State failed to convert on their final shot.

Maine 5, Providence 0

ORONO – Marie-Andree Canuel scored four goals to lead the University of Maine to a 5-0 victory over Providence College in the second game of the Black Bear Invitational Tournament on Sunday.

Maine grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the first half when Canuel scored back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart. Her first goal came on a penalty kick. Heather Hathorn scored early in the second half, followed by Canuel’s final two scores.

Maine outshot Providence 30-5 on the afternoon, Goalie Jasmine Phillips notched her first win and shutout for the Black Bears. Maine improves to 2-0 on the young season, while Providence falls to 1-1.

In the first game of the day, Sacred Heart downed Marist 2-1. Sacred Heart scored with an own goal late in the second half to snatch victory from the Red Foxes.
