JAY – The ability to strike quickly was the key weapon as the Jay High School football team Friday night in a Class C Campbell Conference game Friday night
Senior quarterback Justin Wells threw two touchdown passes, including an eight-yard score to Andrew Deering in the first quarter as the Tigers posted a 27-0 win over Old Orchard Beach at Taglienti Field.
The score was certainly not indicative of the play, as OOB dominated the time of possession. The Seagulls ran 68 total plays to 33 by Jay and drove the ball seemingly at will, up and down the field. The Tigers defense bent, but didn’t break, with four drives stopped in the red zone.
“We would have liked to do more things,” Jay coach Mark Bonnevie said. “We thought that we’d be able to pass more, but you have to credit their defense. They were putting a lot of pressure on Justin and we didn’t have the ball long enough.”
On the initial possession of the game, OOB drove inside the Tiger 30-yard line. The momentum shifted when T.J. Galen intercepted Seagull QB Mike Perron.
Jay (3-1) marched down the field and Wells threw a high-arching ball to Deering in the left corner of the end zone. Mike Nemi kicked the PAT and Jay led 7-0 with 2:32 left in the first quarter.
Old Orchard Beach (1-3) was stopped on its next two possessions, after driving inside the Jay red zone. The Tigers linebackers , Ryan Bourassa, Eric Clark and Trevor McCourt, all came up big.
“The defense really played well,” Bonnevie said. “The offense didn’t have the ball enough. Still, it all comes back to those quick scores.”
Following the second change of possession, McCourt (14 yards, six rushes) broke up the middle and sprinted for a 90-yard TD.
Jay sealed the deal, when Galen returned the second-half kickoff 55 yards for a TD. OOB had tried a squib kick. Wells (6 of 8, 136 yards, two TDs) passed to Joel Ouellette for the conversion. OOB had success in the fourth quarter as Perron (4 of 11 for 54 yards) passed to Jesse Allen for 29 yards and fullback Bobby Seavey (17 rushes, 90 yards) and Dustin Bouchard (65 yards) found room outside, but came up empty. The Seagulls were three of 13 on third down.
Wells threw a 85-yard touchdown pass to Ryan DiPompo to close out the scoring.
