PORTLAND – Justin Sherrod was in the starting line-up for both games of Monday night’s doubleheader despite a nagging wrist injury.
Sherrod hurt the wrist diving for a ball in New Haven on May 4.
The right fielder, who missed four games, still has swelling and discomfort but is trying to play through it.
“It’s still pretty sore,” said Sherrod. “But I think the adrenaline takes over during the game, because I don’t really feel it. (The training staff) tells me I’m not doing any more damage to it, so I want to be in there.”
Sherrod went 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and three RBIs in Sunday’s rout of New Britain.
He also hit his first home run at Hadlock Field while raising his average at home to .231.
Sherrod has hit .353 away from Hadlock.
“It’s been frustrating,” said Sherrod. “I made some adjustments and then I got hurt.
“I told (Sea Dogs manager Ron Johnson) as long as I can help the club, I’ll go out there. But I’m not going to go out and strike out four times or something like that.”
Jeter-fest ends
Derek Jeter wrapped up his five-game rehabilitation assignment with Trenton on Sunday.
The all-star shortstop went 8-for-18 with five RBIs as the Thunder won all five games.
The contests drew a total of 41,093 fans, including 8,729 on Saturday, which is the largest crowd ever for a regular-season game at Waterfront Park.
Jeter will be back with the Yankees for tonight’s game at Yankee Stadium against the Anaheim Angels.
More rehab
Red Sox reliever Matt White arrived in Portland to continue rehabbing his strained oblique muscle.
The left-hander will start the first game of tonight’s doubleheader and throw 40-50 pitches. The Red Sox have until June 6 to add the Rule 5 draft selection to their roster or offer him back to the Cleveland Indians.
Scoreboard watching
Jeremy Owens became just the seventh Sea Dogs’ player to clear the scoreboard in left-center field with Sunday’s two-run blast off of New Britain’s Willie Eyre. He joins Charles Johnson, Josh Booty, Abraham Nunez, Jeff Bailey, Heath Honeycutt and Matt Treanor.
The speedy Owens leads the Sea Dogs in both home run and bunt singles.
Streak ends
Kevin Youkilis’ streak of reaching base ended at 24 games after he went 0-for-3 in the opener. The third baseman had reached in 203 of 223 games (90.9%) since turning professional heading into the twin bill.
In control
Junior Herndon’s third-inning walk of Trenton’s Brian Myrow in the first game of Monday night’s doubleheader was the first free pass issued by a Sea Dogs’ pitcher in 41 innings dating back to last Monday’s game in Norwich.
Eastern League honors
Akron pitcher Jeremy Guthrie has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month for April.
Guthrie, a first-round selection of the Cleveland Indians in the 2002 draft, went 3-0 with a 1.27 earned run average.
Reading’s Jorge Padilla earned Player of the Week honors and Erie’s Jeff Farnsworth was tabbed as Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 11. Padilla hit .458 (11-for-24) in six games. Farnsworth went 2-0 and didn’t allow a run in 15 innings.
