Ex-Maranacook star Greg Creek hits his first career home run to help Maine salvage the doubleheader.
ORONO – The University of Maine crushed the ball in both games of a doubleheader, but came up short in the opener as Binghamton peeled off a 6-3 win before dropping a 12-4 contest in the nightcap.
Black Bear (24-11) senior Joe Drapeau led off the second and fourth innings of Game 1 with solo home run shots. However, the Bearcats (7-25) scored three runs in the sixth behind a homer from Justin Smucker and three doubles for another two runs and a 6-2 lead.
The Black Bears turned up the offensive heat in the nightcap with 14 hits. Greg Creek went 3-for-4, including his first career home run. Creek’s sixth inning homer added a pair of runs, while Drapeau’s three-run blast in the same frame helped double Maine’s score to 12-1.
Mike Collar sent 10 batters to the bench on strikeouts, while scattering six hits and two walks in six an one-third innings for his sixth win of the season.
Tufts sweeps Colby
WATERVILLE – Jon Leeand Randy Newsom each pitched complete games to power Tufts University to a doubleheader sweep of Colby.
Colby (7-14-1) tied the first game at 4-4 with four runs in the fourth inning.
Tufts (18-8) got the eventual game-winning run on an RBI double by Jon Herbert in the top of the fifth inning for the 5-4 win.
Jon McBride doubled twice in the first game and Frank Dinucc had three hits for the Jumbos.B.L. Lippert went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases for Colby. Jay Johnson also had two hits.Dan Deacon pitched a complete game for the Mules.
Evan Zupancic went 3-for-4 with five runs scored in the second game for Tufts as the Jumbos took an 11-5 win.
Brandon Royce had a home run and a double for Colby in the nightcap.
Men’s lacrosse
Wesleyan 11, Colby 10
WATERVILLE – Glen Adams had two goals, two assists and had the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Wesleyan University to an 11-10 victory over Colby College in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action.
Colby (4-8) forced overtime when Joshua Cleaver scored off an assist from Ryan Tyler with just one second left in regulation.
Sam Fleischner added three goals and Jordan Funt had two goals and one assist for the Cardinals (10-4).
Cleaver, Matt Roland, Conor Cooper, Trenholm Boggs and Ben Winston all had two goals for Colby.
Middlebury 10, Bates 6
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Charley Howe led Middlebury with three goals to pace the Panthers to a 10-6 win over Bates in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action.
The Bobcats (5-10) played even in the first quarter, scoring the opening goal of the game and tying things up with 24 seconds remaining to the quarter.
However, Bates experienced an offensive drought for the next 31 minutes as the Panthers (12-1) lead grew to 10-2 over the next two frames.
Bates had six different goal scorers, led by Scott Duddy with a goal and an assist. Mark Dobbyn made 12 stops in goal for the Bobcats.
Bowdoin 11, Trinity 8
BRUNSWICK – Only 16 seconds after Ravi Pillay tied up the match, Connor Fitzgerald stopped the Bantam’s momentum when we whipped up the eventual game-winner and sent Bowdoin to an 11-8 win over Trinity College in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action.
The Polar Bears (7-8) exploded for four consecutive goals early in the second quarter for a short-lived 6-2 lead. Kyle Courtiss notched two of his three game goals during the run.
In the third quater, Bowdoin was limited to the one goal by Ford Gurall as the Bantams tightened up their defense and freshman Coly Smith knocked off two goals.
Grant White made 12 saves for Bowdoin to protect their clinching of the seventh and final berth in the NESCAC Tournament.
Women’s lacrosse
Middlebury 17, Bates 6
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury won its 46th straight women’s lacrosse game Saturday, overpowering Bates 17-6.
Char Glessner scored four goals and Kristin Hanley doled out six assists as the Panthers (11-0) clinched the NESCAC regular season championship.
Becky Castle tallied three goals for Bates (7-9).
Colby 9, Wesleyan 5
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Colby finished the regular season with a 9-5 victory over Wesleyan University in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action .
It was the ninth-straight win for the Mules, who will enter today’s NESCA tournament as the fourth seed and host fifth-seeded Bowdoin.
Amanda Epstein had three goals to lead the Mules. Cara Dionisi and Ally King each had one goal and two assists. Elizabeth Ghilardi added two goals for Colby (12-3). Anna Schierberl Scherr had 12 saves in goal for the winners.
Bowdoin 14, Trinity 8
HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior midfielder Angela King tallied four goals and two assists to lead Bowdoin College to a 14-8 triumph over Trinity College in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action Saturday.
The Polar Bears (9-5) opened up a 2-2 match midway through the first half to enjoy a four goal advantage at the half. Junior attacker Hilary Abrams scored three of her four goals during the run.
Bowdoin erupted for six more goals at the start of the second half to demoralize the Bantams (9-6) with a 13-3 lead.
Goalie Kendall Cox shut down 12 shots for the Polar Bears, while Trinity junior Alexandra Benjamin made eight saves.
