RUMFORD – Youth serves a purpose and Mountain Valley continued to find the going Monday at chilly Hosmer Field.
Mike Brassard scored on a header with 12 minutes left as Monmouth pulled out all stops to rally for a 2-1 win over the Falcons.
Class B Mountain Valley (0-4) had gone ahead on a Craig Bolduc goal late in the first half, but the second half told a different story. The Falcons managed an offensive, but the Mustangs came back with authority.
“Its too bad that we couldn’t put one in during that flurry,” Mountain Valley coach Jarrod Dumas said. “But, we have a young team and they just didn’t respond well. Monmouth was behind, but they played like they were up a goal.”
Class C Monmouth (2-2) controlled most of the last 30 minutes and pelted the goal with 25 shots. The Mustangs’ team speed was a factor, as their players tracked down every loose ball. Monmouth goalie Dylon Remy made 10 saves, while Mountain Valley’s Bryan Canwell was busy (24 saves).
“We switched people around,”Monmouth coach Kit Canning said. “The adjustments made was moving people from the back to the front. It created more opportunities for us and our team speed really helped.”
Josh Davis had knotted the score when he kicked the ball in to the left corner, beyond Canwell. The Mustangs had been awarded a corner.
Mountain Valley was unable to clear the zone and Monmouth kept the pressure up. The play was wide open and created several 2-on-1 rushes. Max Grover helped lead the way for Monmouth.
“We didn’t do a very good job marking-up people,” Dumas said. “Craig Hamann is our most experienced defender, but when he leaves to help out on the outside, it leaves the middle of the field open. We’re still trying to get our positioning squared away.”
The Falcons Sam Hotham assisted on the lone goal. Tyson Hanson set up Corey David. In a 30-second span, the ball hit the left post and cross bar.
Monmouth held a two-to-one margin on shots in the game.
