The Lewiston Maineiacs had an answer for everything the Acadie-Bathurst Titan threw at them Tuesday.
His name: David Perron.
One night after scoring twice to lead the Maineiacs’ efforts, Perron one-upped himself, recording two goals and adding two assists for four points, again leading the team to a 5-2 victory over the Titan.
“He has definitely been the surprise at camp this year,” said Maineiacs’ head coach and general manager Clem Jodoin. “It’s nice to see.”
Fellow newcomer Steven Pearson also netted a pair of goals for the Maineiacs, who are now 5-1 in preseason action.
“The kids played well tonight; we’re very happy with that,” said Jodoin. “We killed off a 5-on-3 tonight with (Danick) Hudon-Paquette, (Alexander) Beaton, (Karl) Hayes and (David) Taylor. It’s still about seeing what they can do in those situations.”
Jonathan Bernier saw his first action of the preseason in the game, stopping 27 shots to earn the win.
“Everything was solid from him,” said Jodoin.
Perron got things going for the Maineiacs with a goal 17:31 into a penalty-ridden first period.
Lewiston skated to a 5-2 edge after the second period, thanks to a goal and two helpers from Perron, Pearson’s pair and a snipe from veteran Eric Castonguay.
In the third, neither team managed a goal, and both teams appeared to calm down, yielding fewer penalties. The Maineiacs play their third game in as many nights tonight in Moncton, and return home for a Friday date with the Wildcats at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
