ATLANTA – Brandon Webb is on a different type of streak, thanks to Mark Teixeira and the Atlanta Braves.
Teixeira drove in four runs against Webb as the Braves beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3 and sent Webb to his second straight defeat.
Webb (9-2) allowed seven runs – four earned – and a season-high 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings, his shortest start since Oct. 1, 2006. He won his first nine decisions before losing 3-1 at Florida last Wednesday.
Webb struck out eight, walked three and fell behind 5-1 in the second inning. The hits were the most he allowed since San Diego had 11 last July 15.
Cubs 3, Dodgers 1
CHICAGO – Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez homered to back Ryan Dempster, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1.
Lee hit a two-run drive in the first inning off Chad Billingsley (4-6) for his 250th home run, and Ramirez added a solo homer against Scott Proctor in the eighth.
Dempster (6-2) gave the bullpen some rest after the Cubs combined to use 11 relievers in consecutive extra-inning losses at Pittsburgh. He allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings.
Brewers 4, Nationals 3
WASHINGTON – Pinch-hitter Gabe Kapler singled home the decisive run in the 11th inning and the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Washington Nationals 4-3.
Prince Fielder led off the 11th with an opposite-field double to left against an exaggerated shift, then moved to third on Corey Hart’s sacrifice bunt. After Russell Branyan struck out, Kapler lined the first pitch from Saul Rivera (3-2) to center for an RBI single.
Carlos Villanueva (3-5) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out five of the six hitters he faced. Salomon Torres got the final three outs for his third save in five tries.
Marlins 7, Mets 3
NEW YORK – Willie Randolph kept his job – for now.
After their embattled manager had a much-anticipated meeting with ownership, the New York Mets got another ineffective outing from Mike Pelfrey and fizzled on offense following a strong start in a 7-3 loss to the Florida Marlins.
Luis Gonzalez hit a three-run double for the young and hungry Marlins (30-20), who moved 10 games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 14, 2005. They lead the NL East despite a major league-low payroll of $22 million on opening day.
Phillies 20, Rockies 5
PHILADELPHIA – Chase Utley drove in a career-best six runs, Jamie Moyer had a season-high seven strikeouts in seven efficient innings and the Philadelphia Phillies pounded the Colorado Rockies 20-5.
Utley hit a three-run shot to tie Lance Berkman and Dan Uggla for the major league lead with 16 homers. Utley finished 3-for-6, Chris Coste added a three-run homer and Pedro Feliz had four hits and four RBIs.
American League
Orioles 6, Yankees 1
BALTIMORE – Garrett Olson pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Nick Markakis went 3-for-4 with a home run, and the Baltimore Orioles ended the New York Yankees’ five-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory Monday.
Aubrey Huff also homered for the Orioles, who snapped a five-game skid that began with successive defeats in New York.
Hideki Matsui had three of New York’s five hits and scored the Yankees’ lone run, on a ninth-inning single by Chad Moeller.
Blue Jays 7, Royals 2
TORONTO – Shaun Marcum won for the first time in four starts, Gregg Zaun hit a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Kansas City 7-2 to complete their first four-game sweep of the Royals.
Toronto outscored the Royals 23-4 in the series and extended Kansas City’s losing streak to eight, the Royals’ longest since Sept. 17-26, 2006. Manager Trey Hillman held a pregame meeting and canceled batting practice, but neither measure worked for Kansas City.
Rays 7, Rangers 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Scott Kazmir won his fourth straight start, striking out 10 in seven innings to lead the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays over the Texas Rangers 7-3 Monday night.
Kazmir (4-1) retired his first 10 batters, seven on strikeouts, before Michael Young singled to center with one out in the fourth.
White Sox 6, Indians 3
CLEVELAND – Orlando Cabrera’s fourth hit drove in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning and the Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland 6-3, handing the Indians their ninth loss in 10 games.
Boone Logan (2-1) pitched a perfect 1 1-3 innings for the win and Bobby Jenks got the final three outs for his 13th save in 15 chances. The White Sox won for the 10th time in 12 games.
Kazmir allowed one run and three hits, striking out the side in the first and third innings. He has given up two runs over 26 innings during his winning streak.
Eric Hinske hit a three-run homer for the Rays, who have won 16 of their last 17 home games and at 31-20 are 11 games over .500 for the first time.
