CLEVELAND – Paul Byrd and two Cleveland relievers combined for the Indians’ fourth shutout in seven games with a 4-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

Byrd (2-3) allowed five hits over 7 1-3 innings, striking out seven without a walk.

The right-hander extended the Indians’ scoreless streak to 34 innings by their starting staff. The last run allowed by a Cleveland starter came Friday night in the fifth inning against Toronto by C.C. Sabathia – the only run yielded by an Indians starter in the last 39 innings.

Phillies 5, Braves 4

PHILADELPHIA – Jayson Werth drove in four runs, Kyle Kendrick pitched six effective innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Kendrick (3-2) shook off a shaky first inning and allowed three runs and six hits. Brad Lidge finished for his 10th save in as many chances, though he allowed his first earned run of the season.

Reds 5, Marlins 3

CINCINNATI – Edinson Volquez pitched six effective innings, Joey Votto homered and the Cincinnati Reds earned a costly 5-3 victory over the Florida Marlins on Tuesday night. Reds shortstop Jeff Keppinger fouled a pitch off his leg in the second inning and X-rays revealed a broken left kneecap. He drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0 and played defense in the third and fourth innings before departing.

Mets 6, Nationals 3

NEW YORK – Ryan Church homered, doubled and drove in four runs against his former team and John Maine pitched six sharp innings to lead the New York Mets over the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Tuesday night.

A night after Mets starter Nelson Figueroa called the Nationals “softball girls” for cheering in the dugout during his loss, Maine (5-2) hit Felipe Lopez with his first pitch of the game.

Padres 4, Cubs 3

CHICAGO – Khalil Greene hit a three-run home run to help Shawn Estes earn his first victory since 2005 with the San Diego Padres’ 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.

Estes pitched 5 1-3 innings and the Padres’ bullpen secured the win with 3 2-3 innings of hitless relief. Trevor Hoffman pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save in nine chances. It was the 531st save of his career.

Royals 3, Tigers 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -Jose Guillen drove in a pair of runs to help the Kansas City Royals rally to beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Tuesday night.

With the game tied 2-2 in the eighth inning, Guillen doubled with two outs off Francisco Cruceta (0-1). Esteban German ran for Guillen. After Billy Butler walked, Mark Teahen had an infield single, but Edgar Renteria committed a throwing error on a backhanded flip to second base, allowing German to score an unearned run.

Rays 2, Yankees 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Gabe Gross singled with no outs in the 11th inning to drive in the first run Mariano Rivera has allowed all season, giving Tampa Bay a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees and sending the Rays into first place in the AL East.

Cliff Floyd began the 11th with a single and pinch-runner Jonny Gomes stole second before Gross delivered the winner up the middle on a 1-1 pitch. Rivera (0-1) had not allowed a run in 14 previous appearances.

J.P. Howell (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.
