DETROIT – Kenny Rogers pitched into the seventh inning and Ivan Rodriguez had three hits and drove in a pair of runs to help the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 6-5 Friday night.
Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs and Rogers held the Yankees to two runs before New York scored three runs off Todd Jones in the ninth, but still lost for the third time in four games. Detroit won for the second time in eight games since sweeping the Yankees in a three-game series in New York. It was the Tigers’ first sweep of at least three games at Yankee Stadium since 1966.
Indians 6, Blue Jays 1
CLEVELAND – Casey Blake and Ben Francisco hit two-run doubles in a six-run seventh inning to help C.C. Sabathia and the Cleveland Indians defeat Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 in a duel of Cy Young Award winners on Friday night.
Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells jammed his left wrist while making a diving catch and left in the sixth inning as Toronto lost for the 13th time in its last 14 games in Cleveland.
Sabathia (2-5) struck out nine over seven innings. The reigning AL Cy Young winner gave up six hits, walked two and won for the first time in five decisions at home this season.
Rays 2, Angels 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – James Shields pitched a one-hitter and Evan Longoria’s two-run, ninth-inning homer snapped a scoreless tie and gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.
Shields (4-2) rebounded from the second-shortest outing of his career to post his second shutout in his past three starts.
The 26-year-old right-hander limited the Angels to Brandon Wood’s one-out single in the third and retired the last 17 batters he faced after hitting Erick Aybar with a pitch in the fourth.
Pirates 3, Braves 2
PITTSBURGH – Freddy Sanchez singled home Brian Bixler with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
Sanchez went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is 9-for-17 in four games since being moved to the top of the Pirates’ lineup.
With one out in the ninth, Jose Bautista singled off Atlanta reliever Jeff Bennett (0-2). Bixler hit into a forceout at second, and Doug Mientkiewicz singled to put runners at first and third.
Cubs 3, D-backs 1
CHICAGO – Ted Lilly kept his glove on his hand this time.
Lilly gave up another homer to Chris Young, but instead of throwing a tantrum on the mound the left-hander led the Chicago Cubs over Arizona 3-1 Friday in the first meeting between the teams since the Diamondbacks’ first-round sweep in last year’s playoffs.
Reds-Mets ppd.
NEW YORK – The scheduled game between the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets was postponed because of rain Friday night. It will be made up Saturday as part of a day-night doubleheader, with start times of 1:10 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Johan Santana is slated to pitch the opener for New York against Matt Belisle, with Mike Pelfrey getting the ball in Game 2 against Reds right-hander Bronson Arroyo.
Belisle and Pelfrey had been the scheduled starters Friday.
The game was called after a delay of about 55 minutes. Long before that, Cincinnati slugger Ken Griffey Jr. was pulled from the starting lineup because of an illness. He was to be replaced in right field by Ryan Freel.
