NORWAY — Bail was set at $5,000 cash Monday for a Paris man charged with leading police on a chase through Albany Township and Norway at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

Kaleb Edwards, 20, appeared in 11th District Court on charges of felony eluding an officer, and misdemeanor speeding more than 30 mph over the speed limit, operating without a license, driving to endanger, attaching false plates, and violating conditions of release.

According to an affidavit written by Sgt. Timothy Ontengco, he and Deputy Joseph Correira were parked near Hunt’s Corner Road and Vernon Street in Albany Township on Saturday when they saw Edwards’ vehicle drift sideways around the corner and accelerate toward Waterford, followed by another vehicle that did the same thing.

While Correira pulled over one of the drivers, Ontengco said that when he attempted to pull over Edwards, he refused to stop and accelerated to speeds of more than 100 miles per hour on Route 118 toward Norway.

At Ontengco’s request, officers with Oxford, Paris and Norway police departments, and Maine State Trooper Jon Russell and his K9 unit assisted in the pursuit.

Oxford Sgt. Rickie Jack contacted Edwards’ mother, Ontengco wrote, and she later said Edwards would turn himself in at the Oxford County Jail.

Edwards is scheduled to appear at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 21 at Oxford County Superior Court.
