CLEVELAND – Victor Martinez’s bases-loaded single scored Grady Sizemore from third with one out in the ninth inning and the Cleveland Indians won their season-high fifth straight, 4-3 over the New York Yankees on Saturday.

Martinez slapped a pitch from Ross Ohlendorf (0-1) into left to bring in Sizemore, who moments earlier came up limping while running the bases.

But Cleveland’s speedy center fielder scored easily after Martinez came through with his first career walk-off hit.

Masa Kobayashi (1-0) pitched two innings, escaping a jam in the ninth, for his first major league win. One of Japan’s top relievers, Kobayashi signed with the Indians in November.

Johnny Damon had four hits, Derek Jeter went 3-for-5 and Jorge Posada hit a three-run, pinch-hit triple for the Yankees, who dropped their third straight.

Tigers 6, Angels 4

DETROIT – Placido Polanco and Magglio Ordonez each drove in a pair of runs, and Detroit beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4 on Saturday for the Tigers’ fourth win in five games.

Tigers rookie Armando Galarraga didn’t get a decision after pitching 5 2-3 hitless innings to start the game. He wound up allowing three runs – one earned – on three hits and two walks in six-plus innings.

Todd Jones, the fourth Detroit pitcher, got his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

Because of injuries, the Tigers still haven’t gotten their best lineup on the field – Carlos Guillen missed this one with a bruised knee – but they still managed to snap the Angels’ three-game winning streak.

Detroit went ahead in the first on Ordonez’s RBI double, then increased the lead to 3-0 on Polanco’s two-run single in the fifth.

The Angels had loaded the bases in the first on two walks and an error, but didn’t get a hit until Vladimir Guerrero’s triple with two out in the sixth.

Torii Hunter bunted to start the seventh, and Galarraga fielded the hit but threw the ball into the stands for a two-base error. Garret Anderson followed with a single, bringing Jim Leyland out of the Tigers dugout.

Orioles 5, White Sox 1

CHICAGO – Brian Burres allowed three singles in eight shutout innings and Guillermo Quiroz hit his first major league homer Saturday as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 5-1 in the first game of a split doubleheader.

The game was a makeup from Friday night’s rainout.

Burres (3-1) had faced one batter in the bottom of the first Friday before rains halted play and the game was eventually called.

But the lefty was plenty sharp coming back Saturday, giving up singles to Jim Thome in the first, Carlos Quentin in the second and Toby Hall in the sixth.

Winning a pitcher’s duel against Chicago southpaw John Danks, Burres retired 20 of the final 21 batters he faced. He walked none and struck out four in his 98-pitch performance.

Royals 2, Blue Jays 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Luke Hochevar picked up his first big league victory in his third career start, Jose Guillen homered and the Kansas City Royals edged the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 Saturday night.

The Blue Jays have lost six straight and 10 of 13, and fell five games below .500 for the first time since last May 25.

Hochevar (1-1), the first selection in the 2006 draft, held Toronto to six hits and one run in six innings in his seventh major league appearance. He struck out three and walked two.

Twins 12, Rangers 6

ARLINGTON, Texas – Michael Cuddyer hit a three-run homer and the Minnesota Twins ended a three-game losing streak with a 12-6 victory over the stumbling Texas Rangers on Saturday night.

Texas, which has lost eight of its last nine, fell short of its third two-game winning streak of the season. Manager Ron Washington remains under fire.
