PARIS — Members of the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School’s Team Green will turn the lights on the school’s outdoor signboard with a wind turbine they constructed during a renewable energy fair Saturday.

Sustainable Oxford Hills is hosting the fair at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in Paris on Saturday, Oct. 24, beginning with registration at 8 a.m. followed by a welcome and keynote address at 9 a.m. Registration is $2. Lunch is $5 and will include soups, breads and apples and a take-home pottery bowl by Scott Currie, a teacher at the high school and adviser of the Team Green club.

“It’s very exciting. It’s really the first of its kind,” said Connie Allen of Harrison, a member of the Sustainable Oxford Hills, a grassroots group of people concerned about the Earth’s climate and the rising cost of oil.

Allen said that anyone in a vehicle that gets 40 miles per gallon or more and shows up in the school’s parking lot will get free admission to the fair.

“As communities we need to plan ahead. We know the price of oil will only go up,” Allen said.

The group, comprising  residents from Harrison, Norway, Waterford and other area towns, began meeting last March to become educated on the issues.

They chose the Oct. 24 date to have the fair to coincide with International Climate Awareness Day when 170 countries will participate in activities promoting sustainable energy. Photos of the activities at the Oxford Hills fair will be sent to the international Web site 350.org and be posted online along with photos of activities from that day around the world. The photos will also be shown on the Time Square’s crawl in New York City.

There will be nine presentations with speakers and demonstrations on issues such as weatherizing homes and businesses, renewable energy sources, green jobs and local food sources. Speakers include Superintendent Mark Eastman, Cheryl Shattenberg from the Weatherization Program at Community Concepts, Noah Wentworth discussing straw bale construction, Paul Thornfeldt discussing radon and moisture, Wendy Merkle on cob construction and much more.

Exhibits will include solar energy and hot water systems, a children’s area with energy and recycling activities including a bicycle-powered generator the children can ride. There will also be an opportunity to view vehicles that get over 40 miles per gallon and those powered by alternative energy sources such as solar.

The events will be held at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in several areas both inside by the Forum, the auditorium and outside.

Topping the fair off will be the activation of the school’s signboard beside Route 26 powered by a wind turbine that has been constructed by the high school’s Team Green. The event is set for 4:20 p.m.
