LEWISTON — The prime growing season may be winding down, but plenty of local farm fresh products are still available. Healthy Androscoggin’s new Androscoggin County Farm Guide will list the products and where they can be found.

The guide includes 44 farms with products ranging from the usual fall crops of apples, pumpkins and winter squashes to the year round offerings of eggs, meats and baked goods.

“The Department of Agriculture’s ‘Get Real Get Maine Seasonal Availability of Maine Fresh Fruits and Vegetables’ is included in the guide to help us see just how much Maine can provide year round, and Androscoggin County farmers certainly provide products year round,” said Marion Browning, worksite wellness coordinator at Healthy Androscoggin.

According to Browning, the guide includes an index to help find farms that sell by means of community supported agriculture (CSA); pick your own operations; Women, Infants and Children (WIC); food stamps and more. There is a listing of farms willing to sell to area institutions such as schools, colleges, hospitals or restaurants.

The guide was created with the help of a student from Bates College.

Hard copies will be available in town halls and libraries throughout the county or at Healthy Androscoggin’s new office at 130 East Ave., in the lower level of the YWCA. Copies may also be downloaded at www.healthyandroscoggin.org.
