100 years ago, 1909

A small boy who has been playing truancy the greater part of this term was captured by the truant officer yesterday morning. The lad objected to being taken to the City Building but went nevertheless. He was kept at the police station until his parents could be seen and it was then learned that they had supposed that he had been attending school regularly and promised to see that he did in the future.

50 years ago, 1959

The Stanton Bird Club will hold its annual Armistice Day luncheon at Thorncrag Sanctuary Wednesday noon. Chairmen of the event are Dr. E. C. Higgins and Charles L. Eastman.

Samuel Stoddard, president, has announced the road is open so cars may be driven to the big fireplace.

Lewiston police were questioning witnesses and possible suspects in a shooting that occurred at Siddhartha’s nightclub on Main Street early Saturday morning.

The shooting was reported at about 12:20 a.m. Radio reports indicated that a 34-year-old man was shot in the lower leg with either a shotgun or a small-caliber handgun. The man was transported to Central Maine Medical Center.

Police were questioning two possible suspects at 1 a.m., but no arrests had been made.
