PORTLAND — The Yamato Drummers of Japan, an electrifying percussion troupe, will return to Merrill Auditorium Tuesday, Nov. 10, courtesy of Portland Ovations.

Performing on an array of traditional percussion instruments large and small — including massive, barrel-like odaiko drums 6 feet in diameter – the men and women of Yamato promise a spectacle of athleticism, grace, precision and musical expertise.

Founded in 1993 in Nara, considered the birthplace of traditional Japanese culture, the master drummers of Yamato are young, modern and brimming with energy as they take the ancient art of taiko drumming and bring it thunderously into the present day.

There will be a free, Ovations Offstage preperformance lecture, “Maine and Taiko Drumming,” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Merrill’s rehearsal hall. A Maine-based taiko drummer and expert on traditional Japanese drumming will discuss this ancient but ever-evolving musical art form.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40, $34, and $28. They are available through PortTix, the box office at Merrill Auditorium, by calling 842-0800 and online at www.portlandovations.org.
