PORTLAND — With flights of romantic fancy and sensuous displays of physical artistry, Circus Maine will celebrate the month of love with its third annual Cupid’s Night Cabaret. Held the weekend after Valentine’s Day, Friday through Sunday, Feb. 16 to 18, the cabaret will feature not-to-be-missed visiting artists, such as a “flash” juggler (think Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail), a fluidly beautiful female hand balancer, and renowned audience-participation magician Norman Ng, among others.

Cupid’s Night marks the first of four, back-to-back monthly cabarets as this Portland-based circus institutes exciting organizational changes and targets new growth. Recently restructured to delineate its performance wing (Circus Maine) from its education wing (the new Maine Circus Academy), the organization plans to expand its professional training program into a national and international force, while at the same time beefing up its public show schedule, broadening its recreational offerings, and launching new wellness classes, such as aerial yoga and massage.

“It’s an exciting time on all fronts,” says Kat Finck, Circus Maine co-founder, producer and casting director. “Taking this leap in separating our business lines will help us to accelerate enrollment in our world-class professional program, and also better enable us to cater to our growing audiences here in Portland.”

Shows such as Cupid’s Night have broad audience appeal, she says. “We want to continue to craft these awe-inspiring spectacles while also training the professional artists of the future right here in our small but mighty port city.”

Maine Circus Academy is currently accepting applicants into its three-year professional training program where students gain mastery in proprioception, balance, active flexibility, and power — skills necessary for professional stage presence and artistic acrobatic movement.

Tickets for Cupid’s Night are available online now and details on the three upcoming shows, set for March 16 to 18, April 20 to 22, and May 18 to 20, will be announced soon, as well as an exciting collaboration for June.
