TORONTO – Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a four-run sixth inning and Andy Pettitte won consecutive starts for the first time this season as New York beat Toronto 5-4 on Monday.
The Yankees won their fourth straight and improved to 19-7 since the All-Star break, moved 12 games over .500 (62-50) for the first time this year.
Pettitte (8-7) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings with seven strikeouts and four walks. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 18th save, striking out Alex Rios, Vernon Wells and Frank Thomas.
Tigers 6, Devil Rays 4
DETROIT – Ryan Raburn hit a tiebreaking single in a four-run seventh, and the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-4 Monday night and stop their longest losing steak of the season.
It appeared Detroit was headed toward its longest losing streak since 2005 before the Tigers rallied against reliever Gary Glover.
Sean Casey hit a one-out homer to spark the inning, Carlos Guillen followed with an RBI triple and Raburn singled for a 5-4 lead.
Cardinals 10, Padres 5
ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Cardinals tied a major league record with 10 straight hits in a 10-run fifth inning, with pitcher Braden Looper and Aaron Miles getting two apiece in a 10-5 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday night.
Scott Rolen’s three-run homer was the biggest hit, putting St. Louis ahead 7-3 and chasing starter David Wells. Mike Thompson entered, and Ryan Ludwick homered on his first pitch.
Indians 4, Twins 0
MINNEAPOLIS – Paul Byrd threw his first shutout in more than two years and Travis Hafner homered to lead Cleveland.
Byrd (10-4) needed 99 pitches to complete the four-hitter.
, his first shutout since July 1, 2005, at Kansas City. The victory allowed Byrd to match last year’s win total, and now he’s eyeing his best season when he went 17-11 for Kansas City in 2002.
Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter – Nos. 4-6 in the Minnesota order – were a combined 1-for-10 Monday night and 3-for-31 in the series. The Twins have scored more than four runs just once in the last 14 games.
