MIAMI – Josh Willingham broke up a pitcher’s duel by hitting a three-run homer off Derek Lowe with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and the Florida Marlins beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0.
Lowe (3-4) took a four-hitter into the ninth, but Hanley Ramirez walked to lead off, and third baseman Wilson Betemit was charged with an error when he failed to come up with a grounder ranging to his left.
Miguel Cabrera advanced the runners by tapping out to Lowe. Willingham then hit the first pitch over the scoreboard for his sixth home run, ending a tense game.
Taylor Tankersley (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth for the Marlins to complete a three-hitter. The Dodgers’ last hit was a leadoff single in the sixth by Juan Pierre.
Just as good as Lowe was Florida’s Sergio Mitre, making his second start following a stint on the disabled list because of a blister. Mitre equaled a career high by pitching eight innings before departing for a pinch-hitter.
The Marlins right-hander allowed only three hits and three walks but remained winless since April 4, 2006. He’s also winless lifetime in 12 games in Miami.
The Dodgers, who drove in two runs with bunts Wednesday, opened the game with a bunt single by Pierre. He stole second and took third on a flyout but was stranded there.
Andre Ethier grounded out with runners at the corners to end the sixth.
Florida hit into two double plays, had a runner caught stealing and left three runners stranded at second.
Dan Uggla and Cabrera had back-to-back singles for the Marlins’ first hits in the fourth. The Dodgers ended the inning by turning a nifty 4-6-3 double play, with Ramon Martinez making a backhanded stop of Willingham’s sharp grounder, then spinning and flipping backhand to Wilson Valdez, who made a barehanded catch and throw as he crossed the bag.
Notes: The walkoff homer was the second of Willingham’s career. … Cabrera was 0-for-14 lifetime against Lowe before his single in the fourth. … In the first two innings of the past five games, the Marlins are 1-for-30 with one walk.
