FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Quarterback Matt Gutierrez, whose promising career at Michigan was cut short by a shoulder injury, was one of seven undrafted rookie free agents signed Tuesday by the New England Patriots.

The others were defensive back Larry Anam of Boston College, linebackers Kyle Bissinger of Alabama-Birmingham and Justin Warren of Texas A&M, tight end Jake Nordin of Northern Illinois, running back Quinton Smith of Rice and defensive lineman Zach West of Texas-El Paso.

Gutierrez was set to be the starter for Michigan in 2004 after John Navarre graduated but underwent season-ending surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder on Oct. 25 of that year. Chad Henne replaced him and kept the job the next two years.

Gutierrez transferred to Idaho State before last season. He had a 54.7 completion percentage with 16 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions as Idaho State went 2-9.
