WASHINGTON – The Orlando Magic overcame Antawn Jamison’s 48 points Tuesday night and kept up a last-minute push to improve their playoff seeding with a 95-89 victory over the Washington Wizards.
Hedo Turkoglu scored 26 points to lead the Magic, who are sitting in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, but could move as high as sixth if they beat Miami on Wednesday, the last day of the regular season.
If they do move up, it will be largely at the expense of the Wizards, who have lost eight of nine and six straight at home – most of them without their two injured All-Stars, Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler. Jamison tried to carry his team with a season-high performance, but he got scant help from his teammates.
Jamison went 14-for-26 from the field. The non-Jamison Wizards went 14-for-54. But Washington’s biggest problem on Tuesday had nothing to do with the absences of Arenas and Butler – the team went 25-for-44 from the free-throw line, including Jamison’s 15-for-24.
The Wizards were especially bumbling in the final minute. Brendan Haywood muffed an easy offensive rebound off his chest with Washington trailing by two, and Jamison missed an easy putback when the deficit was four. The Magic couldn’t help but take advantage, ending the game on a 7-1 run for their third straight win and fifth in six games.
Dwight Howard added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Magic, who shot 50 percent.
Orlando, Washington and New Jersey are the contenders for the Nos. 6, 7 and 8 seeds in the East. Tuesday’s loss dropped the Wizards into a tie with the idle Nets, but New Jersey holds the tiebreaker over Washington.
The Nets finish the season Wednesday at home against Chicago. The Wizards finish at Indiana.
