BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (AP) – Bridgewater State set an NCAA single-game record for RBIs and tied the single-game record for hits on Monday, routing Newbury 57-1 in seven innings.

Bridgewater’s 54 RBIs broke the mark of 53 set by Division II St. Francis of Illinois against Robert Morris in 1996, and its 44 hits tied St. Francis’ performance in the 1996 game.

Steve Smith had seven hits, 10 RBIs and scored seven times to help Bridgewater State break the NCCA Division III records for runs and margin of victory set in Marietta’s 48-0 victory over La Roche in 1999. Smith tied the record for hits in a game.

Mark Claffey also had seven runs for Bridgewater. Bridgewater got a school-record 16 runs in the fourth.

David Carroll scored Newbury’s only run.

Ben Altman, 2-0, got the win for Bridgewater with seven strikeouts, giving up three hits and walking one in five innings.

Anthony DiClemente, 0-1, took the loss for Newbury (0-3), after giving up seven runs in the first.
