BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Petr Tenkrat scored the lone shootout goal, lifting the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
Marc Savard and Shean Donovan each had a goal and an assist, and Marco Sturm also scored for the Bruins, who won for the first time in seven trips to Buffalo. Tim Thomas made 27 saves through 65 minutes and also didn’t allow a goal on eight shootout attempts by the Sabres.
Daniel Briere had a goal and assist, while Chris Drury, with his career-high 31st, and Drew Stafford scored for the Sabres, who forced extra time by overcoming a two-goal deficit. Buffalo snapped a four-game win streak and also lost for the first time in seven home games.
Tenkrat, the Bruins’ eighth shooter, scored when his snap shot was intially stopped by Ryan Miller, but the puck had enough momentum to dribble in under the goalie. Officials initially ruled Miller had made the save, but the goal was allowed to stand after a video review. Boston, coming off a 4-1 loss at the New York Islanders on Thusday, improved to 1-1 during a six-game road trip. The Bruins entered the night in 12th place in Eastern Conference – eight points out of playoff contention.
The already banged-up Sabres lost another regular after forward Ales Kotalik limped off 5 minutes into the second period, and did not return because of what the team described as a lower body injury.
Buffalo is already down four regulars after Maxim Afinogenov, the team’s second-leading scorer, broke his left hand and Jiri Novotny twisted his left ankle in a 2-1 overtime win over Edmonton on Thursday. The second period ended in bizarre fashion after the Bruins appeared to escape with a 3-2 lead and after Tim Thomas had made a remarkable stick save to rob Briere, who was set up at the left post with 53 seconds left. That changed when a video review at the end of the period showed Briere’s shot had crossed the goal lineb before Thomas batted it out.
With the time put back on the clock, the game was delayed for about 15 minutes to allow the Bruins to return after the team had already left for its locker room and some players had taken off their equipment.
Briere’s goal came during an extended power-play, and 48 seconds after Drury scored during a two-man advantage.
Savard was already in the box for slashing when he received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for complaining after Tenkrat was penalized for tripping. The Sabres killed off a 37-second two-man advantage that carried into overtime, while all three of their goals came on the power play.
Donovan’s goal, which put the Bruins up 2-1 midway through the second period, came while Boston was short-handed.
Notes: Stafford and fellow rookie LW Clarke MacArthur were in the lineup a day after being called up from AHL Rochester. … Boston was minus second-leading scorer, C Patrice Bergeron, who missed his second straight game with a lower body injury. … Savard extended his point streak to four games, in which he has a goal and four assists.
