MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Chad Spann hit two home runs to lead the Portland Sea Dogs past the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-4 on Sunday.
Spann’s ninth inning shot broke a 3-3 tie, and Zack Borowiak followed with an RBI single that proved to be the game winner after New Hampshire (38-50) rallied for one run in the bottom of the frame.
The late heroics made a winner of reliever Randy Beam (3-3), who tossed two perfect innings. Rusty Tucker picked up the save, allowing one run on three hits in the ninth.
Rodney Ormond (2-4) took the loss in relief.
Chip Cannon’s solo homer put the Fisher Cats ahead, 1-0 in the second. Portland (52-35) answered with two in the third as Borowiak scored on an error and Tyler Minges later singled home David Bacani.
A Carlo Cota RBI double tied it in the third and Dustin Majewski launched a solo shot in the fourth for a 3-2 New Hampshire lead.
Spann’s first homer of the day tied it at 3-3 in the sixth.
Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, New Hampshire threatened as David Smith led off with a solo homer and the Fisher Cats worked the bases loaded with one out. But Tucker induced Brad Hassey into a game saving double play.
