BOSTON – Jean-Pierre Dumont scored the go-ahead goal with 4:58 left in the second period and Buffalo goaltender Martin Biron made it stand up in the Sabres’ 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night.

Jochen Hecht had a goal and two assists, and Daniel Briere added a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

Hecht, charging down the right wing, redirected Briere’s pass into the net, making it 2-1 with 3:48 left in the opening period.

With the teams skating four on four, Briere scored the tying goal from in close after taking a pass from Hecht at 6:39 of the second.

Dumont then gave Buffalo the lead by one-timing a pass from Hecht in the right circle past goalie Andrew Raycroft’s glove side.

Sergei Samsonov had a chance to tie it for Boston but his shot hit the crossbar from the right circle late in the period.

Biron stopped 40 shots, including three good ones in a sequence 5 minutes into the third. He denied Marco Sturm in front, Brad Boyes on the rebound and Sturm again on the ensuing faceoff. He made 20 saves in the final period.

Samsonov backhanded a shot into Biron at the end of a 2-on-1 break with just over 6 minutes left.

The Bruins built their lead in the opening 7:05 on goals by Sturm and Glen Murray. Sturm netted a power-play goal, backhanding in the rebound of Patrice Bergeron’s shot at 3:41.

Murray made it 2-0 when he took Samsonov’s feed in front and flicked a short shot between Biron’s pads.

Raycroft made 22 saves.

Senators 4, Maple Leafs 2

TORONTO – Dany Heatley scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and the Ottawa Senators again showed their dominance of the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 4-2 victory.

Patrick Eaves, Brian Pothier and Zdeno Chara also scored for the Senators, who have won all seven games against Toronto this season – outscoring the Maple Leafs 40-14.

Alex Steen and Alex Ponikarovsky had goals for the Maple Leafs, who have lost five straight.

Toronto – 4-14-2 since Jan. 6 – is in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in coach Pat Quinn’s seven-year tenure.

The Maple Leafs suffered another blow as Eric Lindros didn’t play in the third period after reinjuring his wrist. He already missed 26 games earlier this season with the injury.

Heatley scored his 36th goal by sending a one-timer past 40-year-old goalie Ed Belfour at 4:24 of the third period.

Toronto had a power-play opportunity with 15.1 seconds left. After the Maple Leafs called a timeout, Ottawa won the faceoff back to Chara, who shot the puck the length of the ice for an empty-netter

Thrashers 3, Capitals 2

ATLANTA – Marian Hossa scored 1:49 into overtime, wristing a shot past Olaf Kolzig as the Washington goaltender was face down and giving the Atlanta Thrashers a 3-2 victory over the Capitals.

Ilya Kovalchuk handed the Thrashers their first lead at 7:08 of the third period with a wrister from the left side of the slot, but Washington rookie Alex Ovechkin forced the extra period with 25.2 seconds left in regulation.

Ovechkin and Kovalchuk each scored their 39th goals to remain tied for second in the NHL behind New York Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr.

Marc Savard had three assists, and Kari Lehtonen made 30 saves for Atlanta, which won for the fifth time in seven games and moved into a ninth-place tie in the Eastern Conference following Boston’s 3-2 loss to Buffalo.

Islanders 4, Flyers 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Trent Hunter scored a power-play goal with 8:39 left and then sealed New York’s victory with an empty-net goal as the Islanders defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2.

With New York on a two-man advantage, Hunter – in the low crease – tipped Chris Campoli’s right-point shot past goalie Antero Niittymaki to give the Islanders their second straight win.

Hunter made it 4-2 with 2.5 seconds left.

U.S. Olympians Mark Parrish and Jason Blake each registered their 23rd goals of the season for New York, while American goalie Rick DiPietro stopped 19 shots for his 21st win.

Petr Nedved and Mike Knuble scored for the Flyers, who are winless in four games and have only three wins in 12 contests (3-7-2). Niittymaki finished with 22 saves.

Hurricanes 7, Penguins 5

PITTSBURGH – Erik Cole scored two goals for the second night in a row before getting hurt in the third period, and the Carolina Hurricanes chased both Pittsburgh goalies in a 7-5 victory over the Penguins.

Cole left the ice in visible pain with 14minutes remaining, clutching his right arm, after being driven into the boards by the Penguins’ Brook Orpik. Orpik drew a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct.

There was no immediate word about the injury to Cole, who is tied with Cory Stillman for second on the team in scoring with 60 points.

Eric Staal had a goal and three assists, giving him four goals and eight assists in four games against Pittsburgh this season.

If Cole’s injury is serious, it could be a major setback to the Hurricanes, who lead the NHL with 88 points after winning four in a row, 10 of 13 and 19 of 23. Cole scored a goal in each of the first two periods Saturday after also scoring twice in a 5-2 victory at home over Florida on Friday night.

Stars 5, Avalanche 3

DALLAS – Mike Modano had two goals and an assist, and Dallas’ slumping power play scored three times as the Stars ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.

Modano and Philippe Boucher converted on two of Dallas’ first three power-play chances after the Stars had gone 1-for-17 with the advantage in their previous three games.

Canadiens 6, Lightning 2

TAMPA, Fla. – Richard Zednik, Mike Ribeiro, and Alex Kovalev scored in a 6-minute span of the third period, lifting the Montreal Canadiens to a 6-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Kings 3, Blue Jackets 2

LOS ANGELES – Sean Avery snapped a scoreless tie with two goals less than three minutes apart in the second period and Michael Cammalleri got the game-winner on a power play with 5:55 left in the third period, leading the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Devils 2, Rangers 1

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Martin Brodeur made 26 saves to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers, becoming the first goalie to win 30 games for 10 straight seasons.
