MEXICO — The fifth annual Mexico
Metalfest will kick off at noon Sunday at the Mexico Recreation
Park.

Headlining the event are Psychostick, a
heavy metal band from Tempe, Ariz., which is on a national
tour promoting its new release, Sandwich, and Ravage, a band
from Malden, Mass., said Nicholas Graham, a member of the local
metal band Hatred Alive, and an organizer of the event.

The all-day event is expected to run
until 8 p.m., and is planned as a family festival.

Besides the two headliners, Hatred
Alive will perform, along with Ripfence of Lewiston, Lost Conscience
of Portland, Putrescine of Dover, N.H., Absence of the Sun of Portland, and
In the Kingdom of Nightmares of Milo.

Children can play on the park
playground equipment. Others may want to swim in the Swift River,
which is next to the park. There are also tennis,
volleyball and basketball areas.

The rec park’s snack bar will be open
all day to serve hamburgers, hot dogs and other outdoor foods.

Graham, who attended Mountain Valley
High School in Rumford and is now a social services student at the
University of Maine at Augusta, said the annual event began when his
band wanted a chance to hang out and hook up with other heavy metal
bands.

“We’re a small festival, but usually
several hundred people attend,” he said.

The rec park pavilion has been spruced
up and moved to the opposite end of the park, Graham said. All bands
will perform on the stage.

Dogs are not allowed in park during the
event.

Admittance is $5. Children under age 5
will be admitted free.
