WASHINGTON – Gilbert Arenas scored 32 points and the Washington Wizards beat undermanned Charlotte 107-97 Saturday night, extending the Bobcats’ losing streak to 10 games.
Antawn Jamison, who scored 20 or more points for the eighth straight game, had 14 of his 23 points in the third quarter as the Wizards won for the seventh time in their last 10 games. He also grabbed 13 rebounds for his 21st double-double of the season.
Primoz Brezec matched his career high with 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Charlotte before fouling out with 2:09 remaining. Raymond Felton added 18 points and a career-high 13 assists.
The Bobcats were missing 73 percent of their scoring, including four of their top five scorers, because of injuries. They played without point guard Brevin Knight, Keith Bogans, Emeka Okafor, Kareem Rush, Sean May and Gerald Wallace.
Ten or fewer players dressed for the 11th time in Charlotte’s past 13 games. For the second time this season, the Bobcats had only nine healthy players.
Brezec’s jumper gave the Bobcats a 94-93 lead with 3:07 remaining.
From there, Arenas and Antonio Daniels each scored six points. It was Arenas’ 20th game of the season with 30 or more points.
76ers 91, Knicks 76
PHILADELPHIA – Chris Webber had 21 points and 10 rebounds and John Salmons added 18 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 91-76 win over the New York Knicks on Saturday night.
Allen Iverson, second in the NBA in scoring at 33.6 points per game, sat out with a sprained left ankle after he was injured in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s loss against Orlando. Iverson is day-to-day and might not make the trip to Orlando for Sunday’s game.
Samuel Dalembert had 15 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Sixers, who played with the kind of defensive toughness coach Maurice Cheeks has preached all season. The Sixers showed glimpses of it in a brief two-game streak last week only to revert to their old ways the last two games.
But they enjoyed a 51-37 rebounding edge for one of the few times this season, held the Knicks to only 35 percent shooting and allowed the fewest points scored against them this year. They won for the fourth time in five games.
Hornets 95, Grizzlies 86
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – David West scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and grabbed 12 rebounds Saturday as the New Orleans Hornets beat the Memphis Grizzlies 95-86.
West led a fourth-quarter charge by New Orleans as the Hornets connected on 11 of 16 shots in the period to keep the Grizzlies at bay.
Six Hornets finished in double figures. Speedy Claxton led the Hornets with 20 points, including 17 in the second period. P.J. Brown had 18 points and Chris Paul finished with 13 despite hitting only one of his 13 shots from the field. Kirk Snyder and Desmond Mason each scored 10.
The Hornets played their first game without reserve forward Chris Andersen, who was dismissed and disqualified from the NBA Friday for violating the league’s drug policy. Several Hornets wore Andersen’s trademark headband.
Pau Gasol led Memphis with 25 points and 16 rebounds, while Bobby Jackson scored 22 points. Mike Miller added 11 points, but was only 1-of-6 from outside the 3-point arc.
Mavericks 103, Jazz 89
DALLAS – Dirk Nowitzki shook off a twisted ankle to score 21 points and Josh Howard scored 24, leading the Dallas Mavericks past the Utah Jazz 103-89 Saturday night for their season-best eighth straight victory.
Coming home after a 5-0 road trip, the Mavericks trailed for only one possession in the opening minutes.
A far bigger scare was seeing Nowitzki doubled over in pain after getting his feet tangled with a Utah player late in the first quarter. He limped off the court and went to the locker room, but returned midway through the second.
The injury may have contributed to Nowitzki taking only eight shots, but he made six. He also made all eight of his foul shots.
Bulls 111, Hawks 99
CHICAGO – Ben Gordon scored 10 of his 23 points in the final 2:28 as the Chicago Bulls held off a strong rally and beat the Atlanta Hawks 111-99 Saturday night to match a season best with their fourth straight win.
Atlanta’s Joe Johnson scored 32 of his career-high 40 points in the second half as the Hawks chopped a 24-point, third-quarter deficit to five in the final period.
Johnson made 13 of 16 shots in the second half during a stellar offensive display that kept the Hawks in the game.
Kirk Hinrich added 22 points for the Bulls, 18 in the opening half when Chicago built a big lead against the NBA’s worst road team.
But the Hawks didn’t fade, despite their poor start.
Johnson’s 3-pointer got Atlanta within 93-86 with just more than eight minutes left. Andres Nocioni, who had nine points in the fourth quarter for Chicago, scored on a goaltending call. Al Harrington scored and after he missed a free throw, Josh Smith grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in to make it 95-90 with 6:44 left.
But Gordon hit three straight baskets and scored Chicago’s final 10 points as the Bulls held on.
Atlanta missed its first seven shots and 10 of its first 11, finishing the first quarter just 7-for-27 (26 percent) and falling into a big hole from which it never recovered.
Hinrich had 12 quick points, his three-point play and Luol Deng’s jumper gave the Bulls a 25-9 lead.
The lead went to 18 and Chicago led 31-15 at quarter’s end, shooting 67 percent.
Rookies Salim Stoudamire and Marvin Williams helped the Hawks get within 10 in the second quarter, but Hinrich converted a three-point play after being fouled on a jumper and then sank a 3-pointer to push it back to 55-37.
Tyson Chandler’s follow-up slam, a jumper by Jannero Pargo and Chris Duhon’s 3-pointer closed a 15-2 run and made it 62-39 at the half.
